The Definition of the Thing with Some Notes on Language

Publication information: The Definition of the Thing with Some Notes on Language (New York: W. W. Norton, 1980). Miller’s manuscripts for his Harvard dissertation of 1921-22—which, with slight editing, make up the bulk of this book—are found in Box 38 of the Miller Papers. The editorial ‘dead matter’ from the Norton book is to be found in Box 37 of the Miller Papers. With the exception of the title of the dissertation, all titles are editorial additions.
