Learning Management Systems (LMS)

Online Learning Management Systems (LMS)

Edmodo, Schoology, and NEO LMS are Learning Management Systems (LMS) that allow you create a virtual interaction classroom. These systems allow an easier way to assess students’ learning patterns, as well as pinpoint what students are struggling with, in an effort to provide a more streamlined and effective way to teach.

Edmodo

Edmodo is one of the highest consistently ranked LMS. It specializes in having immediate and actionable feedback in order to show which lessons are making an impact in student learning, as well as illustrating which students are meeting expectations, which are borderline, and which are behind. While Edmodo is an effective tool for teaching, it lends itself to K-12 student population. With an emphasis for a more hands-on approach from teachers, at the college level, this might not be the preferred way for professors to engage with students.

Other features: Free service, Full Collaborative Learning Management System (LMS),

Google Drive Integration, social networking, Facebook-like interface that would appeal to students, supports three languages (English, Spanish, and Portuguese).

Schoology

Schoology is also a highly ranked LMS that has two parts: one that focuses on K-12 type education, and one that focuses on Higher Education. Schoology emphasizes on creating a vibrant digital ecosystem by facilitating communications among students and teachers. It presents an interface like that of Glow in terms of discussions threads among students that professors can easily navigate and join. Schoology not only facilitates dialogue between students in the same classes, but also increases communication between professors in different departments.

Other features: Free (there is an option to pay for Enterprise support, though not necessary), Full Collaborative Learning Management System (LMS), Google Drive, Turnitin, Dropbox, and LTI content integration, complete compatibility with Apple products, social networking, simple interface like that of the new Glow.

NEO LMS

NEO LMS is cloud-based platform that emphasizes use through tablets and mobile phones. It is a more basic version of both Edmodo and Schoology and allows for much more customization of class dashboards. One of the biggest advantages that NEO LMS has over both Edmodo and Schoology is that is supports over 20 languages as well as automatic translation between postings between users that speak different languages.

Other features: Free, individual, small school, and enterprise versions. Unlike Edmodo and Schoology the free version does not allow access to most of the NEO LMS features. Modern easy to use interface, social networking.

General Review:

While all three LMS services seem to have great reviews, Schoology tends to be reviewed more favorably. One of its biggest advantages over Edmodo and NEO LMS is their complete compatibility with Apple products. Given the popularity of Apple products on campus between professors and students, and their extensive use of those laptops, tablets, and phones for class presentations and other academic work, Schoology might be the best LMS option.
