7 Places to find foreign movies on the net

There are many ways to incorporate the Internet as an educational tool in your classroom.  When it comes to movies, there are a variety of websites- both free and paid- that can prove to be great resources for you in your classes. Seven of the most useful websites are listed here.

Kanopy

Kanopy is an on-demand streaming video service for educational institutions that provides 12 million students and faculty with access to more than 26,000 films each year. Kanopy offers collections with titles from PBS, BBC, Criterion Collection, Media Education Foundation and more. YouTube

YouTube_LogoYouTube is the biggest video sharing website in the world and is home to 19 different genres of movie language channels. Though YouTube is generally free, a large portion of these movies must be either rented or purchased with a credit card in order to be viewed. Some of the languages available are Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish.

Netflix

Netflix-LogoNetflix is a subscription based internet streaming media service that also provides titles through DVD by mail. It also has a wide array of titles to select from 32 languages including Arabic Language, French Language, German Language, Italian Language, Japanese Language, Mandarin Language,  Russian Language, Spanish Language

MUBI

mubi-logoMUBI is another online subscription based streaming website that shows 30 films at a time while blending aspects of social networking to the website as well. Much different from YouTube or Netflix’s a la carte video library, MUBI’s experts select one new film every day and stream it for 30 days, resulting in a library of 30 films per month. Most of the movies selected are “cult, classic, independent, and award-winning films from around the world.”

Fandor

fandor-logoFandor is another online subscription based streaming service that focuses on “indie, classic, foreign and cult cinema.” It offers its own library to choose from (like YouTube and Netflix) and includes International film subgenres such as African, Americas, Asian, Eurasian, European, and Middle Eastern.

Archive.org

archive-logoArchive.org” is a non-profit digital archive with the mission of “universal access to all knowledge.” In terms of movie selections, it is the most limited and unorganized of the five resources. Its movie library contains more than 15 languages but offers very few choices within each language. Some languages included are Arabic, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish.

Academic Video Store

Williams college currently has access to the video collections Dance in Video, Opera in Video, Oral History in Video, Theatre in Video through the libraries. These collections has certain videos in languages other than English. The other collections that include non-English material are Asian Film Online, Ethnographic Video Online, New World Cinema, and The Criterion Collection.
