哈台班 Week 8

My final week at HTA was bittersweet, filled with memorable moments and heartfelt goodbyes. At our last language table, my classmates, teachers, and I enjoyed a lively meal of Shanghai cuisine. Additionally, to make the most of my last week in Taiwan, I decided to arrive at the NTU campus a little early one morning and join the group of elderly people who dance in front of my building every morning. The dancing was simultaneously relaxing and energizing, and the group of people I had joined was pleased to have welcomed me into their daily routine. It was just one small but joyful reminder of the many spontaneous moments that made this summer so special to me. Between the final exam and late-night studying this week was the endless laughter during class and at office hours. We concluded the program with a banquet, where the students were finally able to converse in English again and reflect together on how much we had improved our Chinese abilities in just two months. It had even felt uncomfortable to start speaking with my classmates and teachers in English again! I grew increasingly comfortable speaking Mandarin, not just when ordering a meal or drink at a restaurant, but also in everyday interactions with my host family and HTA excursions. These eight weeks have been an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in Taiwan’s culture and language, and I am deeply grateful to the Department of Asian Languages, Literatures, and Cultures’ Linen Fellowship for making this journey possible.
