We took the MTR and stopped for some tarts before arriving at the Hong Kong Museum of History at 9:45 am, where we met up with Professors O’Connor and Whitten. We went on a guided tour of an exhibition called “Hong Kong Story” and our guide explained the history of Hong Kong. I thought it was especially interesting to hear about the Hong Kong before the British came (it wasn’t actually a “barren rock”)and its connection with China. Next, we went through a special exhibition about the Silk Road from a Chinese perspective, compared to the Eurocentric view I had learned about in middle school.
After we left the museum, some of us went to have ramen and explore Kowloon Park, where we went to the aviary and strolled around in the beautiful weather.
We met up with the whole group again for a guided tour of Kowloon. It was led by a Lingnan University alum, who gave us the alternative tour of the area and talked about a lot of real issues in Hong Kong; for instance, she showed us the insane rent and buying prices of housing on the window of a real estate company and walked by the makeshift homes of employed homeless people beneath a bridge.
We finished the tour in a market and explored that area before going to Tim Ho Wan for dinner. After dinner, we climbed up a hill and talked and observed the city before heading back to Lingnan to go to bed.
