Musings of an African Brain

I am wired this way I say in my defense,
Wired to think about the hopelessness in every situation
Wired to ignore the 5 percent chance that this or anything else might work
Truth is, I am wired to be afraid
Wired to assume
Not to ask, not to talk, only to listen
Wired to think my thoughts don’t matter
And that adults are always right
Even though I know in my heart this can’t always be
Nevertheless, so shall it be.

But I’m wired does not mean it in my genes
That it is in my genes does not mean its unchangeable
With exposure, experience, education
I have come to know
That hope is the belief of things yet unseen
and I am breaking my mental shackles
running young, free and wild because I can
Enjoying the new taste of mental liberation and savoring
Every, every, every moment
Because now I know: that a 1 can become a 100 if you believe
And a 100 a 1 if you believe.
