How does breastfeeding protect against HIV?

In developing countries where noncommunicable and infectious diseases threaten vulnerable children, formula milk, which is expensive, may not be the solution for mothers infected with HIV. Although there is a 15% transmission rate, breastfeeding is deemed worth the risk for these mothers because their child may be protected from other diseases by their mother’s nutritious breast milk. More research must be done to investigate what components of breast milk prevent HIV from being transmitted from mother to child.
