WCFM’s semesterly cover festival, known for the first time ever as Cov Ball (formerly Covercella, we know you love the new name), took place on March 15 in comfy and cozy 70 Basement.
Doors opened at 9:30 for early birds to get drinks and first dibs on the plentiful merch table. A slew of new designs were available for purchase, many of the shirts were even 1 of 1, so please treat them with love and affection.
Our first musician took the stage at 10 p.m. and the acts ran until 1:30 a.m. The lineup was jam packed with regulars and fan favorites as well as new faces and combinations. Never a dull moment during the run of show, 70 Basement remained jam packed with bodies and feeling until the very end.
Like any real DIY, rugged, indie sleaze, punk, etc. concert, some issues arose as the night rolled on. Perhaps most memorable was the loss of power. In the middle of a song, the crowd at peak fervor, everything went black. Absolute chaos broke out, all individuality lost in the swelling crowd. Yet a sound rang through the sonic tumult like a lighthouse shining through stormy ocean sky. Keeping perfect time on the drums, Temani Knight kept the hivemind material and bought enough time for WCFM’s top electrical engineers to solve the issue and the show went on. Thank you Temani.
Someone also managed to sneak upstairs into 70 House and wildly spray balsamic vinaigrette all over the kitchen, an act of immense immaturity and disrespect. We at WCFM wholly condemn the actions of this individual and urge them to come forward and take responsibility for their churlishness.
Despite these setbacks and, in fact, in the face of them, the first iteration of Cov Ball was a resounding success. WCFM’s usual radio wave transmissions were made sonic, its DJs able to broadcast their favorite tunes with their listeners right in front of them. Thank you to everyone who attended and we wish you a great rest of spring semester.
