After looking into RE:THINK I found out that they were doing a month of beach clean ups all around Taiwan! I figured it would be the perfect way to interview individuals who are interested in Environmental issues. So I after spending some time in 桃園 recovering from jetlag, I made my way to 苗栗。I realized, however, it was hard to get around certain counties without using a taxi or going on long walks. So I decided to talk to those in my hostel about their experiences and learn more about Hakka culture.
Due to missing the clean up in 苗栗，I made my way to the next stop: 台中大安沙丘。I had a set of questions that I prepared for my first set of interviews asking questions like: 你認為台灣的年輕人或學生在推動環境正義方面可以扮演什麼樣的角色？I talked to around 20 people! I was really nervous at first since I was the only 外國人 around, but I met some really nice volunteers that helped me build up my confidence and brought people my way. Afterwards, some more people I talked to drove me to a train station. The next day I got hotpot with those volunteers and learned a lot about their journeys and philosophies outside of the interviews. Probably the best week I’ve had so far!
