Asst. Prof. Becky Taurog is a biochemist. However, she also has a passion for many other aspects of life, including yoga and meditative practices. She has found that the yogic philosophies and practices for integration of mind, body and ‘spirit’ (however you wish to think of it) provide powerful tools to help people become happier and healthier. She blends her understanding of basic physiology, anatomy, and psychology with her enthusiasm for the kinesthetic experience to help her students gain stability, insight, and, ultimately, joy and freedom through their practice.
Becky’s journey into yoga began on New Year’s Day, 2007 while she was a postdoctoral fellow in La Jolla, CA, when a friend of a friend took her to a yoga class. She immediately recognized that yoga provided something that she had been craving deeply. Since then, her yoga practice has been a haven from the challenges of her personal life, a respite from the rigor of her scientific pursuits, an antidote to anxiety and competitiveness, a cure for (and occasionally the cause of) physical pain, a compass and map for her life, and a source of inspiration, insight and fun. She has learned over and over that life still happens on the mat – everything we struggle with most will arise in our practice, allowing us to confront ourselves from within the safety and support of the practice, with the help of our teachers and community. She has also learned that yoga practice does not end when we step off of our mats – we strive to maintain the same calm, equanimity, vibrancy and insight in all of our daily activities.
Becky has trained in many yoga traditions, including Ashtanga, Iyengar, ParaYoga, and Viniyoga. As a teacher, she wields her broad training to support each person based on their individual needs and goals. She is grateful for the numerous teachers who have supported her learning and practice, particularly Ben Vincent, Josh Vincent and Richard Freeman.
