Board Positions
The Cap & Bells board’s term of office runs from April, when elections are held, until the end of the following school year. All participants in Cap & Bells productions are welcome to vote in the election. Any member, including those not currently on campus, may run for office by submitting a self-nomination before the election. Join our google group to find out more about the board!
The positions available may shift year-to-year at the discretion of the outgoing board, as the needs of the organization change. Below are descriptions for the positions of the 2022-23 Board.
Artistic Director: responsible for the programming of the Cap & Bells season, acting as an artistic resource for directors and designers, and acting as the general artistic liaison for all Cap & Bells activities to the 62 Center faculty and staff, the Office of Student Life, and any other relevant parties. The Artistic Director serves as President of Cap & Bells.
Please reach out to the Artistic Director for: questions about proposals, deliberations and their standards, advice on directing, writing, acting and designing, etc. If you are in charge of a second stage production, please reach out to the Artistic Director for any and all questions or concerns with the model.
General Manager: responsible for fundraising, house management, managing the board and organizational listservs, room reservations, and being a liaison with the 62 Center faculty and staff (specifically the Box Office), the Office of Student Life, etc. Responsible for all activity on social media, including Instagram, Facebook, etc., as well as distribution and marketing, updating the Cap & Bells website, taking photos and coordinating student photographers, organizing tickets and creating programs. The General Manager serves as Vice President of Cap & Bells.
Please reach out to the General Manager for: publicity for auditions, show dates, and other promotional materials once your project with Cap & Bells has been approved.
Dramaturg: serves as a resource for directors by providing theatrical and historical research, as well as artistic support in general.
Please reach out to the Dramaturg with: parameters on research on your approved project (questions about previous productions, history/period, theatrical movements associated with a piece, etc).
Technical Director: responsible for providing guidance, assistance, and direction of all technical aspects of Cap & Bells productions, including set construction, props, and costumes. The Technical Director is also responsible for working with the production team to create a timeline for Design deadlines, barn runs, Build, Tech, etc.
Please reach out to the Technical Director with: plans for any and all production design by the deadline(s) set by the Production Team, advice constructing any and all theatrical equipment, etc, as well as scheduling and assistance for barn-runs, Build and Tech.
Assistant Technical Director: responsible for assisting the Technical Director in all areas of technical production enumerated under the above Technical Director description.
Please reach out to the Assistant Technical Director with: plans for any and all production design by the deadline(s) set by the Production Team, advice constructing any and all theatrical equipment, etc, as well as scheduling and assistance for barn-runs, Build and Tech.
Production Manager: responsible for communication with the Production Manager and Technical Director of the Williams College Theatre Department, coordinating the needs of individual Cap & Bells shows with the Cap & Bells Technical Director, planning of work calls, strike, and safety training as needed, as well providing guidance and assistance to production teams on all production aspects, and reserving rehearsal spaces.
Please reach out to the Production Manager with scheduling concerns, room reservations, assistance in building a design team, or when in need of a liaison to the ‘62 Center Production Manager, Technical Director or Building Manager.
Associate Production Manager: responsible for assisting the Production Manager by providing guidance and assistance to production teams, in any manner as delegated by the Production Manager.
Please reach out to the Associate Production Manager with scheduling concerns, room reservations, and needs for improved communication within a production team.
Assistant Production Manager: responsible for assisting the Production Manager by, for example, keeping minutes of Board meetings, holding votes, providing the minutes to Board members, and keeping records of current Cap & Bells membership.
Please expect communication with the Assistant Production Manager to be in the form of reminders or through various meeting notes for your project.
Treasurer: responsible for managing the budget of the Cap & Bells season and for each production, overseeing all expenditures, providing regular budget reports to the Board, reimbursements, and deposits of ticket sales.
Please contact the treasurer with all purchasing needs and expect guidance on where to find money without paying out of pocket.
Master Electrician: responsible for implementing the lighting and sound design drawn up by a production’s designers, including preparing, hanging, connecting, and focusing stage lighting fixtures, wiring and organizing light and sound in off-site productions, and providing technical direction on all light and sound aspects of productions.
Please contact the Master Electrician with all lighting and sound needs and plans for both ‘62 Center and off-site productions.
Head of Musical Direction: proficient in music reading and performance in order to review scores for any proposed musicals. Serves as a liaison between Cap & Bells and musicians, including connecting to Music Department resources as necessary, helps locate Music Directors for musicals, and serves as a Music Director for musical readings if others cannot be found.
Please contact the Head of Musical Directions with all interest in Staged Musical Readings, with a need for analysis of a musical score, or for discussions on microphones in conjunction with production.
Performance Culture Supervisor: responsible for serving as a human resource consultant for the Cap & Bells Board and all Cap & Bells productions, including Second Stage productions, resolving conflicts that may arise within the board or in productions.
Please contact the Performance Culture Supervisor with any complaints towards the Cap & Bells Board or its individual members. For any given production, please first approach the Stage Manager with a human resource issue and expect to be placed in touch with the Performance Culture Supervisor. All members of a Cap & Bells production will be given the unix and phone number of the Performance Culture Supervisor in the event that a member does not feel comfortable approaching the Stage Manager, the Stage Manager does not properly handle the complaint, etc.
Social Coordinator: responsible for community building work, organizing workshops with other clubs, and planning social events. The community builder will work to bring new people into the Cap & Bells community.
Please expect to hear from the Social Coordinator about Cap & Bells events ranging from dance/vocal workshops with dance and acapella groups on campus, to karaoke nights, other smaller scale performance opportunities, and even Cap & Bells formal events.
