- Through a lucid presentation, Professor YUEN Wai Hei Samson gave us a thorough introduction to Hong Kong’s complicated political system, revealing, in his word, “the dark side” of Hong Kong culture.
- In the afternoon, our group explored a little bit more of the New Territories 新界 where Lingnan University is located. Lingnan is situated near a New Town called Tuen Mun 屯門 which is on the edge of the New Territories. In the eyes of many Hong Kongers, this is really a “remote” place. But it is actually a good thing that our travel course is based here, because the students get to see not only the bustling and prosperous aspect of Hong Kong, but also its mundane, suburban/rural side. New Territories is also a place that has preserved many traditional and historical aspects of Hong Kong.
In front of the gate of the 500-year-old Walled Village Kat Hing Wei 吉慶圍 near Yuen Long 元朗 (only four MTR stops away from Lingnan University)
Too bad we missed the ticket selling time by 7 minutes and couldn’t enter the Hong Kong Wetland Park. A look from outside affirms that this is a must-visit site in the New Territories. The park is actually quite close to the Lingnan campus with easy access from MTR and the light rail.
A happy ending for the day with some Shanghai cuisine.
