Day 5

1/9/18:

Today’s lecture on Hong Kong’s urban cultures was engaging and thought-provoking. Although I don’t think the characterizations of Hong Kong as migrant, vertical, global, protest, or hybrid cities necessarily mutually exclusive or collectively exhaustive, I particularly enjoyed hearing about the notion of Hong Kong as a vertical city, since one of the first things I noticed coming out of the airport was that the buildings were extremely tall. After lecture and discussion, I went to Shenzhen for the first time. Compared to the cramped and busy streets of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was a breath of fresh air. We sang and we ate, and though that sounds simple, it was enough to make today my best day in Hong Kong so far. Here’s to all the “best days” to come.
