Today I was surprised by the subtle and dramatic tactics of members of the Umbrella Movement. I was shocked again and again by the creativity, the ingenuity, and utility of their activism, their creation of art, community, and peace in the midst of a movement for change. Actions were intentional and oriented towards multiple goals. The movement was strengthened through collaboration, commitment and dedication to community, and careful control of identity. Protestors used what they had, their bodies, minds, and skills to support one another and to make the movement centered around learning, growth, and empowerment. Actions were demonstrative and also immediately useful. One gripping example of this was the creation of a study space for student activists in the middle of the occupation camp. The movement was thoughtful, intentional, localized, and a clear, vibrant reflection of the people of Hong Kong.
