Today started with a short run, past Fu tai and into the uncharted wilderness that Tuen Mun is to me. I came across people commuting to work and children going to school – the same thing you’d expect anywhere else when the sun is rising on a Monday morning. However, what struck me the most was just how similar everything seemed as I ran through the streets. Everything from the bright green taxi cabs, the children’s school uniforms to the towering apartment blocks repeated itself in a seemingly endless loop. I was able to find my way back to my room before class well in time for Professor Annie’s lecture. During the lecture we discussed population dynamics and in particular the importance of Foreign Domestic Workers in Hong Kong and the Aging population. She mentioned the importance of cultural traditions from both Britain and China that characterize the uniqueness of Hong Kong and I kept thinking of the orderly, almost “cookie cutter” feeling I got during my run this morning. Looking back noticing the signs that dot the roadway and sidewalks instructing Hong Kongers what to do, and what not to, the importance of order is evident.
