Today we had a class on Hong Kong’s Urban Cultures taught by Professor Paul O’Connor that I found very intriguing. We went over a bit of the history of Hong Kong again, delving deeper into diversity in the city when it became part of the British empire and diversity in Hong Kong today. In addition, he used five different paradigms to explain the culture of the Hong Kong: a migrant city, a vertical city, a global city, a protest city, and a hybrid city. When we broke up into groups for discussion, my group ended up talking a lot about Hong Kong as a protest city with the Umbrella Movement and comparing it to the US.
For lunch, a bunch of us took the light rail to Yuen Long. I had this soup with flour noodles, a sweet bread, and a sweet, oily sesame thing with mochi in the middle.
After that, Adriana, Haley, and I maneuvered our way to Central to find a shopping mall/art hub called PMQ. We found out that PMQ stands for Police Married Quarters because the area used to be home to local ethnic Chinese rank-and-file officers and their families before it was transformed (though the original campus was the first government school in Hong Kong providing western education to the public). We walked through two buildings, stopping in stores of unique jewelry or bags or artwork or clothing. Once we had explored the whole complex, we found our way to Man Mo Temple, which is a temple from the 19th century that had a lot of incense inside.
We roamed around the area and had dinner at a ramen restaurant that was very filling and delicious. Stuffed, we found our way to some bubble tea and discovered we were back in the area we had been to on Saturday – we’re slowing making our way through the city! We successfully navigated the subway system at what seemed like peak time and made our way back to campus.
