inthe.net Explorer
Final multimedia project by Shane, Arselyne, Ivana and Ava
This short final film is a response to the question: Do digital technologies eliminate distinctions of race, reinscribe troubling stereotypes, and/or create some terrible combination of both?
Short Answer: Yes, digital technologies do eliminate distinctions of race and reinscribe troubling stereotypes.
Long Answers:
Log Line: The illusion of a seemingly fun, post-racial digital world is shattered for an eager inthe.net Explorer.
Themes: The ability to perform racial identities that are not your own online (Raciailized Fantasises on the Internet by Christina Sharpe; “On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog” – 1993 New Yorker Cartoon); The impossibility of having a post-racial online experience due to the fact that: 1) social and racial inequalities exist online, and 2) conversations on race happen so often even when we don’t think we are having them (Introduction to Race and Digital Technology by Lisa Nakamura).
