{"id":1017,"date":"2013-08-28T12:19:34","date_gmt":"2013-08-28T17:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/vintagepoints\/?p=1017"},"modified":"2013-08-28T12:19:34","modified_gmt":"2013-08-28T17:19:34","slug":"let-freedom-ring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/vintagepoints\/2013\/08\/28\/let-freedom-ring\/","title":{"rendered":"Let Freedom Ring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/vintagepoints\/files\/2013\/08\/March-on-Washington-button.jpg\" title=\"March on Washington button\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1018\" alt=\"March on Washington button\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/vintagepoints\/files\/2013\/08\/March-on-Washington-button-300x247.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"206\" style=\"margin-top:7px;margin-left:25px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/vintagepoints\/files\/2013\/08\/March-on-Washington-button-300x247.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/vintagepoints\/files\/2013\/08\/March-on-Washington-button.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>On the fiftieth anniversary<\/strong> of Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s \u2018I Have a Dream\u2019 speech in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963, and as many in our nation pause today at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) to commemorate this seminal event, it\u2019s good to be reminded also of the many resources available at Williams College related to Dr. King, to the history of the Civil Rights movement in America, and to African-American history and culture in general.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/vintagepoints\/files\/2013\/08\/Stride-toward-Freedom-dj.jpg\" title=\"Stride toward Freedom dust-jacket\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1019\" alt=\"Stride toward Freedom dj\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/vintagepoints\/files\/2013\/08\/Stride-toward-Freedom-dj-199x300.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" style=\"margin-top:7px;margin-right:25px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/vintagepoints\/files\/2013\/08\/Stride-toward-Freedom-dj-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/vintagepoints\/files\/2013\/08\/Stride-toward-Freedom-dj.jpg 519w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>The Chapin Library contains several books by Dr. King, including <em>Stride toward Freedom<\/em> and <em>Why We Can\u2019t Wait<\/em>, both signed by the author, the latter also with an inscription by Coretta Scott King, and a special printing of Dr. King\u2019s speech on accepting the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. Also here is a dramatic 1965 telegram from Dr. King to Congressman Seymour Halpern (one of the co-sponsors of the Voting Rights Act of 1964), in connection with a dispute over Negro disenfranchisement in Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>Extensive holdings from earlier periods trace the arrival of African captives in the New World, the development of slavery in America, and the struggles of African-Americans to claim their civil rights following the Civil War. Among these are works by civil rights activist (and Great Barrington native) W.E.B. Du Bois, who died fifty years ago yesterday, on August 27, 1963.
