{"id":1181,"date":"2011-09-14T12:38:44","date_gmt":"2011-09-14T16:38:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/thea228\/?p=1181"},"modified":"2011-09-14T12:44:07","modified_gmt":"2011-09-14T16:44:07","slug":"subscribing-to-google-calendars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/thea228\/how-to-2\/ipads-in-class\/subscribing-to-google-calendars\/","title":{"rendered":"Subscribing to Google calendars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have two Google calendars related to THEA 228, one for classes and any other meetings or events happening that relate to the academic side of things; and a second calendar related to the production itself, which handles rehearsals, production meetings, due dates, tech and performances. \u00a0We want you to have access to both of these calendars on your iPad in the native iCal app, and this post will walk you through the steps needed to make that happen.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>Part 1: \u00a0Setting up gCal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, you will need a Google account, aka a Gmail address. \u00a0If you do not have one already you can sign up for free at mail.google.com \u2014 though remember that if you have an account for <em>any<\/em>\u00a0Google service then you have a Google account, even if you&#8217;ve never used Gmail. \u00a0(If you have a YouTube account, and depending upon when you first created it, that account might be a Google account as well.)<\/p>\n<p>If I don&#8217;t have a Gmail address for you\u00a0I will send the calendar invitations to your Williams email, which will invite you to create a Google account and subscribe to the gCal calendars for the class. \u00a0If you do have a Gmail address, or if you have already linked your Williams email to a Gmail account (for example, if you have already gone through this process while working on a show for the Theatre Department, or another class) then you should get an email saying that &#8220;sirromdivad [that&#8217;s me] has invited you to share such-and-such calendar.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Once you both have a Google\/Gmail account, and have the 2 THEA 228 calendars shared with it, you should be able to go to\u00a0https:\/\/www.google.com\/calendar\/ and see the two calendars in your calendar list on the left. \u00a0Unless you rename them they are called &#8220;THEA 228 Class calendar&#8221; and &#8220;2 THEA 228 Production Specific Calendar&#8221; (the &#8220;2&#8221; means it is the second production of the year; the Theatre Department keeps these calendars on gCal for all productions.) \u00a0And you should see events on the calendar itself \u2014 just double check this by looking at a Monday or Thursday, our class should be there from 1:10-3:50.<\/p>\n<p>[Once you have this set up, you could also add in your other calendars as well, if you would like to be able to look at those events on your iPad at the same time as THEA 228-related things. \u00a0In general to do this you need an address for the calendar you want to add to gCal, in the iCalendar (ical) format \u2014 not to be confused with Apple&#8217;s iCal apps, though that <em>is<\/em>\u00a0the format used by calendars in those apps for sharing. \u00a0Instructions can be found <a title=\"Subscribe to calendars in Google calendar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/calendar\/bin\/answer.py?answer=37100\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 2: \u00a0Setting up iCal on your iPad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, we have set up your iPad to talk to the Google servers. \u00a0For our purposes we will only be setting up sync with Google Calendar, but one could use this same process to sync Mail and Contacts as well.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1184\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/thea228\/files\/2011\/09\/photo-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1184\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/thea228\/files\/2011\/09\/photo-1-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/thea228\/files\/2011\/09\/photo-1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/thea228\/files\/2011\/09\/photo-1-400x300.png 400w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/thea228\/files\/2011\/09\/photo-1.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Go to Settings on your iPad<\/p><\/div>1.
