One of the most spontaneous things I\u2019ve done during this trip was booking a last-minute weekend trip to Okinawa with two friends. With almost no planning, we somehow crammed the days with experiences I never imagined I\u2019d have. Before I knew it, I was on a Skymark flight out of Kobe, bound for Japan\u2019s southernmost prefecture, a place that once thrived as its own independent kingdom.<\/p>\n
Our first stop was the world-famous Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, home to the massive glass tank that houses whale sharks, manta rays, and other large fish. Standing in front of that 27×74 ft blue wall of water, it felt surreal watching these giants glide effortlessly back and forth. That afternoon, we went scuba diving at the Blue Cave, a spot famous for the way sunlight filters through the entrance and turns the entire cave into a glowing, otherworldly shade of blue. It was my first time scuba diving, and the breathing mechanism initially sent me into mild panic, where every inhale felt mechanical and every exhale too loud. But as I adjusted, my focus shifted from the awkwardness of intentional breathing to the mesmerizing world around me: darting schools of fish, shifting beams of light, and the gentle sway of water.<\/p>\n
Between activities, we made time to try one of Okinawa\u2019s traditional dishes, Okinawa soba. Unlike the buckwheat-based soba found on the mainland, Okinawa soba is made from wheat flour noodles, giving them a thicker, chewier texture. The broth is a delicate but flavorful combination of pork, bonito flakes, and kelp, a legacy of the island\u2019s history that blends Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian influences during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Ours came topped with slow-simmered pork belly, fish cake slices, and a sprinkle of fresh green onions. The meat was so tender that it fell apart at the touch of chopsticks, and the broth carried a gentle smokiness that lingered after each sip, making it the perfect comfort food after a long day. We also wandered into American Village, a colorful, theme-park-like district influenced by the nearby U.S. military base. It looked more like a movie set than an actual slice of America with its bright lights, flashy storefronts, and a strange mix of Okinawa charm and imported kitsch.<\/p>\n
Personally, the highlight of the trip was a one-hour taxi ride. Since Okinawa\u2019s only public transportation (outside the central city of Naha) is the bus, we found ourselves sharing the back seat with our driver\u2019s life story. He had been born and raised on the island, and his best friend growing up was an American soldier stationed at the base. They had been inseparable until the soldier was sent back to the U.S. years ago.<\/p>\n
What struck me most was how naturally the conversation flowed. It was the first time I felt fully confident expressing myself in Japanese, even when discussing abstract topics like the state of the world and the behavior of young people today. He listened intently, understood every word, and even recommended a few books that had influenced him. I\u2019m currently reading one of them, Lifetide by Lyall Watson, and it\u2019s making me think about that conversation all over again.<\/p>\n
