I’m Nick Chen, a rising sophomore, and here is my belated first blog reflecting on my experience at the 2025 Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies as a third-year student. Although the program ended some time ago, there are still so many fresh memories and experiences I’d like to share! Before diving into the details, let me start with a quick introduction.

I’ve always been fascinated by Japanese history, culture, and media. During my senior year of high school, I used my free time to begin self-studying Japanese and quickly realized the unique nuances of the language, whether the confusing yet fascinating trio of Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji scripts or the sophisticated use of honorifics. But self-study had its limits, so I enrolled in second-year Japanese during my freshman year and enjoyed it ever since. While my speaking abilities were limited at first, taking Japanese classes at Williams and joining the KCJS program really helped me overcome those barriers—whether in everyday conversation or more formal discussions and debates.

The third year program at KCJS is designed to help students make the critical breakthrough from casual, personal conversations to more advanced discussions involving subjective opinions on social issues, current events, and abstract topics. This shift requires mastery of complex grammatical structures, nuanced vocabulary, and cultural sensitivity. Thanks to the immersive nature of KCJS, I was able to develop and refine these higher-level language abilities with locals both in and out of Doshisha University. Outside the classroom, I was fortunate to build connections with a local squash coach, a politically active family, a taxi driver based in Okinawa, and the many strangers I struck up conversations with in cafés around the city. These everyday encounters challenged me to engage more deeply with the language and culture, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity. I truly consider it time well-spent.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to sharing more soon!
