Nagoya, Japan: Week 2 (Jun 7-Jun 14)

This week, I went to my Japanese classes at Nanzan University. My commute is almost an hour and a half, which is much longer than I’m used to, because I have to take a bus and two different trains to get to the university. The Japanese classes are challenging, but the teachers are very engaging and fun. My host mother is an amazing cook, and I enjoy her dinners every night. I have tried so many new Japanese foods in just two weeks of staying here, from salt-water eel to Nagoya’s red miso pork cutlet. I also enjoyed learning some Japanese calligraphy from my host grandmother, who has done calligraphy for nearly 60 years. I have done Chinese calligraphy before, but Japanese hiragana characters are more challenging due to being more circular. During the weekend, I went shopping with my friends in the biggest shopping district in Nagoya, Sakae, and also went bowling with my host family.
