Week 3: The Palace Museum

This post is definitely coming a little late… Halfway through the summer semester and I’m only just starting to hammer out a decent sleep schedule. To catch up on what I’ve been doing, I’ve decided to write about my trip to the National Palace Museum on July 10th. I think that’s three weeks in?

Outside Entrance

I’ve been to the other National Palace Museum in Beijing, before, though I don’t remember much of it. I was on the call with my mom when we first entered, and she was super jealous that I got to come to the Taipei one–she told me a lot of the good stuff had been moved here, and I definitely came to see that.

Jadeite Cabbage

Meat-Shaped Stone

The Meat-Shaped Stone and Jadeite Cabbage had their own special exhibit on the top floor. The Meat-Shaped Stone looked a little lonely in its glass display. I’ve actually seen it once before, when it was lent to the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, though like the Beijing Palace Museum I don’t remember much of it. Definitely an impressive work of art, one that makes you super hungry.

Spring and Autumn period food and wine vessels

One of my favorite parts was the exhibit on ancient copper works. It’s amazing how detailed and well-preserved these artifacts from thousands of years ago, and as someone interested in food history, it was especially cool to see the food/drink vessels and learn more about the elaborate banquet customs of ancient China.

Tried and failed to read the scripts in the calligraphy exhibits

Unfortunately, we’d gotten lost on the way (my fault: got on the bus going the wrong way), so we lost a bit of time and weren’t able to check out all the floors. We’re definitely planning on going back sometime this next month to finish the whole place! In fact, writing this now, two weeks later, it’s really reminding to get on planning that…
