I was getting more used to the workload now. I enjoyed the one-on-one session for the chance to speak to teachers and have them check my pronunciation and tone. Back at Williams, I thought my pronunciation was fine because we didn’t have that much time learning Chinese a day, and workload from other classes made it harder for me to pay attention to these small details. However, here, the teachers let me know specifically what I need to improve on and helped me improve it. I took the time to go to office hours in the evening to read passages to the teachers and had them fix my pronunciation. This week we discussed the problems of migrant workers, China’s overpriced real estate, and medical ethics. Afternoon activities were also fun! I learned how to play Mahjiang on Monday. I went out with a friend on Friday to Wudaokou and we found a mala restaurant where we choose our own food and had them cook it for us. We enjoyed the experience but both thought it was a bit salty. We also went to Yiheyuan on Saturday. The teachers took the time to show us around and explained the cultural and historical significance of the place. It was so beautiful!
