That is, Antigua was a common, historical destination of Spanish explorers, who were interested in Antigua as an optimal trade post, but also noticed the island’s abundant sugar supply. By the 18th century, Antigua was the site of more than 150 sugar-processing windmills, each of which was the center of a plantation. On another interesting note, turns out that Antigua actually got its name from Christopher Columbus (big surprise), who named the island after Santa Maria la Antigua, the miracle-working saint of Seville.

Santa Maria la Antigua

What are your thoughts?

While doing some research on Antigua, I learned that the small island actually has a history shared by many other Caribbean islands.
