Required Courses
Physical Training – Performed twice a week (Monday & Thursday), one hour each session from 0600-0700, to effectively condition and train cadets, physically, geared towards passing and going beyond the standardized Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA). However cadets are always recommended to perform supplemental physical training sessions outside of ROTC. Cadets participating in varsity sports are exempt after passing PFA. *Important: Given the longer drive to RPI, Williams cadets are allowed to conduct PT sessions on their own.
Air & Space Studies – Sessions vary by class level (100-400); geared to educate cadets about Air Force History, Air Power, Leadership, Mentorship, and Active Duty. For Freshman and Sophomores this class is from 0700-0800 on Tuesday mornings before Leadership Lab.
Leadership Lab – Known as the “ROTC” portion of Air Force ROTC; having a 110 minute time block from 0800-0950 (Tuesday) to train GMC cadets for participation in Field Training and implement/ test POC leadership abilities. LLAB provides multiple leadership, mentorship, and informational values to cadets educating them about topics including weapons training, marching, survival skills, briefings, etc.
First Term Cadet Center (FTCC) – The purpose of the First Term Cadet Center is to gradually introduce new cadets into the AFROTC program, aiding their transition into the life of a military student in a civilian institution. The program is designed to teach all the essentials of AFROTC life that would not otherwise be covered in weekly AS class or LLAB. By the end of the FTCC program all cadets should have a firm grasp of the AFROTC program and what is, and will be, expected of them as a cadet. Times for FTCC classes vary by semester, but the classes are generally 2-3 hours of additional instruction per week.
Extracurricular Activities
Unarmed Drill Team (UDT) – A program designed to mimic the routines of marching based on Air Force Drilling standards. UDT helps cadets grasp a hold on fundamental marching movements which will be implemented throughout their cadet career paths. Cadets will participate in not only one but multiple drill meets in competition with other Detachments. This is program only for first year cadets and is highly encouraged.
Armed Drill Team (ADT) – Practicing the basic fundamentals of Navy Drilling with additional Rifle movements, ADT will help cadets with an extreme attention to detail to the nearest degree. Cadets will participate in multiple drill meets in competition with other Detachments.
Honor Guard (HG) – A ceremonial unit composed of selectees who are carefully screened for their physical ability and dexterity in presenting the colors (American, Air Force, POW/MIA) on various occasions. HG has a high commitment, however it is seen as an honor to participate in. Cadets will participate in but multiple drill meets in competition with other Detachments, and multiple events.
Arnold Air Society (AAS) – A professional, honorary, service organization advocating the support of aerospace power. AAS is an elite group of Officer Candidates whose commitment is to serve the community and other groups in need.
Intramural Sports (Taylor Trophy) – Formally known as the Taylor Trophy, cadets will have the opportunity to participate in Two-Hand-Touch Football (fall), Basketball (winter), and Frisbee (spring) in competition with the Army and Navy/Marine ROTC units. Despite being the smallest ROTC detachment at RPI, Air Force almost always wins.
