The lab had a strong showing at the APS March Meeting, with Caroline Tally ‘21.5, Adam Dionne ’22 (co-advised with Prof. Henrik Ronellenfitsch), and Woody Martineau ’22 (also co-advised with Prof. Ronellenfitsch) presenting talks, and Rose Tchuenkam ’23 attending as a co-author of Caroline’s work. (Prof. Dan Sussman ’07 — now at Emory Physics — joined us for dinner and a photo.)

Prof. Jensen awarded NSF grant to study soft adhesion
Professor Kate Jensen has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The three-year, $413,000 grant in collaboration with Purdue University will support her research project titled “Deformation-Dependent Adhesion of Stretched Compliant Networked Polymer Systems.” The project will focus on increasing understanding of how changing the shape of soft, adhesive materials (e.g., through stretching or compression) modifies their adhesive properties and may lead to the development of new responsive adhesives.

“Tiny Plants, Big Answers”
Our new plant biophysics project — and collaboration with Prof. Joan Edwards in biology — studying how Marchantia polymorpha liverworts harness surface energy from water during asexual reproduction was featured in the summer issue of the Williams Magazine in an article titled “Tiny Plants, Big Answers.”
Summer Lab Outing!
The lab took to the trees (and picnic tables) at Ramblewild for our summer lab outing!
Sky-aks were meant to fly.
Ephs @ Soft Matter Day —Best Poster Prize and Great Question Prize!
Congrats to Anneliese Silveyra ’21, who won the prize for “Best Experimental Poster” at the 2018 Soft Matter Day at UMass-Amherst! Also presenting talks or posters at the one-day workshop were Jeremy Thaller ’19, Josh Kang ’20, Heather Kurtz ’20, Zed Lyons ’20, Justin Berman ’21, Joey Headley ’21, Hyeongjin Kim ’21, and Aidan Duncan MGRH’19. Hyeongjin also brought home a second prize for the group by asking one of the best questions of the conference. He won a bag of marshmallows.
Ephs @ the New England Complex Fluids Meeting!
The lab travelled to MIT on June 15 for the New England Complex Fluids Meeting, and Justin Berman ’21 gave the very first student conference talk from the group! While there, we met up with Sophia Millay ’21 and Nick Patino ’21, who are both doing REU summer internships at the Harvard Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC), as well as Zed Lyons ’20, who is supported by Williams ASIP to do research with our collaborator Prof. Tim Atherton at Tufts University this summer.
