{"id":850,"date":"2017-05-04T10:17:21","date_gmt":"2017-05-04T15:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/lj1\/?p=850"},"modified":"2017-11-20T16:57:05","modified_gmt":"2017-11-20T21:57:05","slug":"windows-10-install-to-external-usb-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/lj1\/labs\/windows-10-install-to-external-usb-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows 10 &#8211; Install to external USB drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Update (Sept 2017) &#8211;<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An even easier way to do this is to copy your wim image to a windows 10 computer and run the &#8220;Windows to Go&#8221; application.\u00a0 In the Windows to Go app, choose the disk you want to install the image on and then choose the wim image you want to put on that disk.<\/p>\n<p>The result should be a bootable windows 10 external disk that will boot on just about any computer!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Using a Windows 10 computer, follow the standard procedure to format the external drive and set it to be bootable in DiskPart:<\/p>\n<p><code>Diskpart<br \/>\nDiskpart&gt; list disk<br \/>\nDiskpart&gt; sel disk 1      (be sure to select the correct disk!)<br \/>\nDiskpart&gt; clean<br \/>\nDiskpart&gt; create partition primary<br \/>\nDiskpart&gt; format fs=NTSF quick<br \/>\nDiskpart&gt; active<br \/>\nDiskpart&gt; assign letter=g<br \/>\nDiskpart&gt; exit<!--more--><\/code><\/p>\n<p>Then with the Windows install disk in drive D, copy and apply the install image to the new disk:<br \/>\n(the &#8220;\/appy-image&#8221; option for dism seems to be available only in windows 10.
