{"id":87,"date":"2014-02-10T14:35:47","date_gmt":"2014-02-10T19:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/librarycommittee\/?p=87"},"modified":"2014-02-10T14:35:47","modified_gmt":"2014-02-10T19:35:47","slug":"september-17-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/librarycommittee\/uncategorized\/september-17-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"September 17, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Library Committee Summary, September 17, 2013<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Present:\u00a0 Steve Sheppard, chair; Duane Bailey; Ondine Chavoya, Logan Lawson, Dave Pilachowski, Dinny Taylor, Adam Wiener<\/p>\n<p>Absent:\u00a0 David Gaines, Ben Nathan, Bob Volz, Chris Winters<\/p>\n<p>At this first meeting of the year, members were welcomed by Steve Sheppard and then took turns introducing themselves.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Building project logistics<\/span>:\u00a0 Dave and Dinny shared information about some upcoming timeline landmarks<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chapin Library and archives will close on December 20, 2013 and won&#8217;t reopen to the public until September 2014.\u00a0 Their Southworth and many of the majority if their LSF collections will be moved by National Library Relocations (NLR)to the new building during mid-March to early April 2014.\u00a0 The intervening time will be spent organizing collections.<\/li>\n<li>The Center for Media Initiatives (CMI) staff will begin to move into their new space and set up their systems in May\u00a0 or June<\/li>\n<li>Sawyer collections will be moved by NLR beginning in June 16 over four weeks.\u00a0 Sawyer will be closed during this time. Schow will remain open and will be the pick-up point for ILL books.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Possible future Library Committee agenda items<\/span>:\u00a0 the following topics were suggested but additional topics are welcome.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ideas for celebrating the last year of current Sawyer Library: show 70&#8217;s era videos, cover band, videos.\u00a0 Have someone from art history put this architectural style into context. A longer brainstorming session will be held later this semester.<\/li>\n<li>Open Access as way to widen the impact of faculty, staff and student publications.\u00a0 Some departments post their own working papers, or do so via a regional or disciplinary repositories.\u00a0 Unbound (see below) is another option that will soon be available.<\/li>\n<li>Unbound: The Williams Digital Commons.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/unbound.williams.edu\">Unbound<\/a> is a joint library-OIT project that can provide a place to post scholarship, images and data.\u00a0 It is also a platform for digital scholarship that makes digital resources available for dynamic manipulation and combination to create new scholarship.<\/li>\n<li>Differential treatment of intellectual property produced on campus.\u00a0 Faculty and students have copyright of their work although student work created while working for the college becomes college property.\u00a0 Staff created work is the property of the College.<\/li>\n<li>Review and approve acquisitions allocations for departments and programs (at October meeting).<\/li>\n<li>Review major 2014\/15 library budget proposals.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss the transfer of some annuals to the LSF<\/li>\n<li>Other topics that arise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Committee members put on hard hats and safety glasses for a walking tour of the new building.\u00a0 The CMI, special collections, and some of the areas of Sawyer were visited to the general pleasure of the group.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting concluded at 5:40.<\/p>\n<p>Notes by Dave Pilachowski<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Library Committee Summary, September 17, 2013 Present:\u00a0 Steve Sheppard, chair; Duane Bailey; Ondine Chavoya, Logan Lawson, Dave Pilachowski, Dinny Taylor, Adam Wiener Absent:\u00a0 David Gaines, Ben Nathan, Bob Volz, Chris Winters At this first meeting of the year, members were welcomed by Steve Sheppard and then took turns introducing themselves.
