{"id":487,"date":"2010-10-12T09:12:50","date_gmt":"2010-10-12T14:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jltane.williams.edu\/"},"modified":"2011-07-06T17:52:45","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T17:52:45","slug":"proceedings","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/jltane\/proceedings\/","title":{"rendered":"Proceedings"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>It was our great pleasure to host The 24<sup>th<\/sup> Conference of the Japanese Language Teachers\u2019 Association of the Northeast Region of the United States (JLTANE) on June 19 and 20, 2010 at Williams College.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the JLTANE 2010 was \u201cRaising the Next Generation \u2013 Teacher Training in Asian Language Pedagogy.\u201d\u00a0 Professor Patricia Wetzel of Portland State University delivered the keynote speech entitled \u201cWhat Do Grammar and Technology Have in Common.\u201d\u00a0 Observing the parallel development or evolution of grammar and technology, Professor Wetzel addressed the essentials of how we teach foreign languages and how we train personnel who want to be teachers.\u00a0 Following the keynote speech, Professors Wako Tawa, Amherst College, Emiko Konomi, Portland State (then Williams College) and Cecilia Chang, Williams College discussed teacher training in Asian languages at a special round table discussion.\u00a0 Professor Tawa stressed the importance of grammar instruction in language education sharing her vision in workshops that had been led by her at Amherst College for the high school Japanese teachers.\u00a0 Professor Konomi raised questions on what we really mean by teaching authentic spoken language and examined how properly trained teachers can achieve greater authenticity in Japanese language instructions.\u00a0 Professor Chang detailed how Chinese language teacher training has been evolving in response to the urgent increase of the Chinese language student population based on her teacher training experience in Middlebury College.<\/p>\n<p>We would like to extend our appreciation to those who put their presentations together for the proceedings.\u00a0 Our special appreciation goes to Professor Tamae Prindle, the President of JLTANE, who composed the history of JLTANE from the inception of this association for this edition of the proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Kasumi Yamamoto, Conference Chair, JLTANE 2010<br \/>\nAssociate Professor of Japanese<br \/>\nDepartment of Asian Studies<br \/>\nWilliams College<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 15px;color: #697e87;font-weight: bold\">President\u2019s Address<\/span><br \/>\nTamae Prindle, Colby College<br \/>\n<a title=\"History of JLTANE\" href=\"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/jltane\/files\/2010\/09\/Prindle_JATANE2010.pdf\">History of JLTANE<\/a> (Japanese Language Teachers\u2019 Association of the Northeast)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, Geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 15px;color: #697e87;font-weight: bold\">Keynote Speech<\/span><br \/>\nPatricia Wetzel, Portland State University<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/jltane\/files\/2010\/09\/Wetzel_JLTANE2010.pdf\">What Do Grammar and Technology Have in Common?
