Lawmakers are trying to oust him."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 130<b> <\/b>members of Congress and the European Parliament on Tuesday called for the ouster of the oil executive leading the next U.N. Climate Change Conference in the United Arab Emirates this fall.<\/p>\n<div class=\"teaser-content grid-center\">\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/documents\/28b5777b-b4d8-42ff-9861-49edc49cd792.pdf?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tuesday\u2019s letter<\/a> represents a remarkable rebuke of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/01\/12\/uae-cop28-climate-talks-sultan-al-jaber\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decision to name Sultan Al Jaber<\/a>, who runs the state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, as president of the climate summit. It comes as human rights advocates also voice anger and disbelief over the UAE\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/05\/16\/emirates-syria-cop28-bashar-assad\/9bd6d114-f3c9-11ed-918d-012572d64930_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invitation of Syria\u2019s embattled president<\/a> to the climate talks, known as COP28.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Both climate and human rights activists say the integrity of the climate gatherings are at stake.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cIt\u2019s pretty straightforward: The head of a national oil company should not be the president-designate of a climate conference,\u201d Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), who signed the letter along with 34 other congressional Democrats, said in an interview. \u201cIt\u2019s a slap in the face to young climate activists.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">While often mired in controversy, the annual COP negotiations remain the leading global forum<b> <\/b>for nations to address climate change, and pressure is mounting on them to deliver on past promises.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Some participants argue the fossil fuel industry must be part of the discussion, but Khanna said that having an oil executive lead the global conference goes too far.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cSure, have them at the table,\u201d he said. \u201cJust don\u2019t put them at the head of the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">The letter is addressed to leaders on both sides of the Atlantic, including President Biden, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, U.N. Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres and Simon Stiell, the executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change. It urges these leaders to \u201cengage in diplomatic efforts to secure the withdrawal\u201d of Al Jaber.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cWith commonsense reforms to help restore public faith in the COP process severely jeopardized by having an oil company executive at the helm,\u201d the letter says, \u201cwe respectfully submit that different leadership is necessary to help ensure that COP28 is a serious and productive climate summit.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Adnan Amin, the chief executive of the COP28 talks, said in an emailed statement that Al Jaber is uniquely qualified to lead the conference, noting that he also serves as chairman of Masdar, a renewable energy company based in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cDr. Sultan has a 20-year career in the renewable energy space,\u201d Amin said. \u201cMasdar is one of the world\u2019s largest investors in renewable energy, with 25 thousand megawatts of operational clean energy on its books right now and a goal to expand to 100 GW by 2030.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">U.S. climate envoy John F. Kerry has also voiced strong support for the appointment of Al Jaber, calling him a \u201cterrific choice\u201d because of \u2014 not despite \u2014 his role atop an oil giant.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">\u201cThat company knows it needs to transition\u201d away from fossil fuels, Kerry <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-politics-united-states-government-only-on-ap-john-kerry-b5d6482d465dcc8fa5063af9a0e44041\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Associated Press<\/a> in January after attending an energy conference in Abu Dhabi. \u201cHe knows \u2014 and the leadership of the UAE is committed to transitioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css overrideStyles font-copy\" dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), who helped organize the letter, pushed back on this assessment.
