It was first published in 1981.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In their introduction, Cherr\u00ede Moraga and Gloria Anzald\u00faa, the editors of the anthology, note that the process of creating this book led to a \u201cgreater solidarity with other feminists of color across the country\u201d (1st edition, xxiv). The anthology soon became a reflection of \u201can uncompromised definition of feminism by women of color in the U.S.\u201d (1st edition, xxiv). There are now four editions of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This Bridge Called My Back, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with the most recent edition published in 2015<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the introduction to the fourth edition of the anthology, Moraga emphasizes the importance of political memory in order to ensure that \u201cwe are not always imagining ourselves the ever-inventors of our revolution\u201d (4th edition, xix). The continued publication of the anthology serves as a form of political memory that Moraga encourages us to recognize; however, it also calls attention to the following question: Why do we still need to create platforms for women of color in order for their voices to be represented?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moraga argues that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This Bridge Called My Back <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ought to be considered an \u201carchive of accounts of those first ruptures of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">consciencia <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">where we turned and looked at one another across culture, color and class difference,\u201d (4th edition, xxiv). However, the ultimate purpose of this fourth edition of the anthology is for \u201cthe next generation, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and the next one<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d (4th edition, xxiv). This anthology seeks to create solidarity among women of color and through this edition, across generations. When the first edition was published, it was \u201ccreated with a sense of urgency\u201d and \u201cfrom the moment of its conception, it was already long overdue\u201d (1st edition, xxiv). The activists of that time recognized that this \u201cwas a book that should already have been in [their hands]\u201d (1st edition, xlv), and, in creating this anthology, they were ensuring the existence of this platform for future women of color. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1331\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1331\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1331\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/fourtheditionthisbridgecalledmyback-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/fourtheditionthisbridgecalledmyback-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/fourtheditionthisbridgecalledmyback.jpg 335w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1331\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the fourth edition of This Bridge Called My Back. It was published in 2015, making it the most recent edition.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moraga believes that the women who contributed to the first edition of the anthology would call the next generations their \u201c \u2018familia\u2019&#8211; [their] progeny,\u201d entrusting the next generation \u201cwith the legacy of [their] thoughts and activisms, in order to better grow them into a flourishing planet and a just world\u201d (4th edition, xxiv). The anthology serves to remind its readers to recognize the efforts made by previous activists and that we cannot expect to see the end of the movement.
