As evident in the issue\u2019s title, <em>Lilith<\/em> #17 unpacks the anti-Semitic slur \u201cJAP\u201d (Jewish American Princess) as it was popularized on college campuses in the mid 1980s. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1062 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/lilith-17-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lilith #17 cover\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/lilith-17-229x300.jpg 229w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/lilith-17-768x1006.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/lilith-17-782x1024.jpg 782w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/>The ethnic insult rests on the stereotype that all American Jewish women are materialistic, wealthy, socially inept, and sexually available. In a series of non-fiction articles, <em>Lilith<\/em> addresses the direct relationship between sexism, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and violence in an effort to demonstrate to its readers that \u201cJAP jokes\u201d are not jokes at all, but an expression of age-old prejudice that endangers those targeted by such \u201chumor.\u201d The articles pay specific attention to Syracuse University, which the magazine notes as having a large and growing Jewish population and a growing anti-Semitic backlash problem. In his research of the anti-Semitic graffiti that popped up all over campus, sociology professor Dr. Gary Spencer documented and categorized the graffiti in the library carrels and told <em>Lilith<\/em> that the experience left him \u201cliterally shaken\u201d and \u201cnauseated\u201d (9). Dr. Spencer noted that the graffiti ranged from sexist (\u201call JAPs are sluts\u201d) to annihilationist (\u201cgive Hitler another chance\u201d or \u201cthis is a warning to <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1068 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/jap-e1575599039251-268x300.jpg\" alt=\"Text in Lilith describing the &quot;Ten Best JAP Jokes&quot;\" width=\"268\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/jap-e1575599039251-268x300.jpg 268w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/jap-e1575599039251-768x858.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/jap-e1575599039251-916x1024.jpg 916w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/engl113-f18\/files\/2019\/12\/jap-e1575599039251.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/>American JEWS. We will kill you all\u201d) to stand-alone slurs (\u201ckikes\u201d). The professor concluded that \u201cthese days, the anti-JAP graffiti have been replaced with vile anti-Semitic slogans\u2026.people no longer feel the need to hide an anti-Semitic comment behind a JAP joke\u201d (7). <em>Lilith<\/em> here attends to an important issue that likely would have resonated with a lot of its audience: female college-age and educated Jewish feminists. By demonstrating the connection between sexism, anti-Semitism, and white supremacy, <em>Lilith<\/em> reinforces the importance of intersectional solidarity in Jewish feminism, while reminding readers that the fight for Jewish women\u2019s safety and equality was not over yet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lilith\u2019s fall issue in 1987, titled \u201cJAP Baiting on Campus,\u201d exemplifies the publication\u2019s commitment to produce content directly relevant for young Jewish feminists of the time.
