Live blog on the ring-shaped SoFi on June 21, 2020

Chromosphere is full in a fabulous photo from Pakistan , which can be shared here with the kind permission of the photographer Talha Moon Zia: The moon is only slightly smaller than the sun, so that the arch appears exceptionally long. Also projected sun sickles from India – and a very tough webcast watcher. [9:25 CEST] Antumbra seen from the ISS . [9:35 CEST] An article and video clip from China. [9:50 CEST]

Feeds from Taiwan here and here from the ring zone as well as here and here – good weather everywhere, ring at 10:13 CEST. Meanwhile, more great beads from Oman and India here and here . [9:55 CEST]

The closing and opening of the ring from the feed above from Yunlin – sections from screenshots in full video resolution, brightened and increased contrast. In 5 minutes the Antumbra – a brilliant Meteosat time-lapse and a Himawari picture – leaves the planet. And more pictures with chromosphere from Zia and from Tibet (also more from there) as well as all kinds of visuals in this article . [10:25 GMT] More Bilderchen a few photos from Ethiopia … and from Europe from Rhodes a few partial phases , ditto from Athens. [11:05 CEST] All successful webcasts with ring times , pictures with chromosphere here , here , here , here , here , here and here , with beads here , here , here , here , here and here , series with ring here , here , here and here , videos with ring phase here and here , the Antumbra from the ISS here andhere and from Himawari here , here and here and articles and picture series here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here and here . [23:55 CEST – end. ADDITIONS: and here , here , here , here andhere as well as more chromosphere & beads here , here and here , composites from the moon’s edge here and here and from the phase progression here , here and here plus a satellite video of the Antumbra]

The best Baily’s Beads so far have just come from India

in this webcast , where the ring was brighter than the others (simply filmed through an eyepiece) – there were other ring phases in webcasts here and here . The virtual Ring SoFi: a great success – but it would have been much nicer to have been there myself, that is now clear … [8:30 CEST] The ring phase in motion from Oman and further screenshots from India here , here and here . And a “screenshot” of a different kind . [8:40 CEST] A nice broken ring in these camera back shots too . [9:10 CEST]

A terrific ring phase from Pakistan right now – it lasted only seconds, but the pattern from Baily’s Beads, which raced around the moon’s edge, was breathtaking – that’s why annular eclipses, especially with such a narrow ring, are as exciting as total ones, at least photo and video. [8:10 CEST]

A beautiful ring, with Baily’s Beads, came live from Oman

a few minutes ago, from the multi-feed (the other Omani transmission was unfortunately not entirely from the annularity zone). [7:40 CEST] There was an even better ring phase in this Arab feed , from which this still picture comes. [7:50 CEST] Another sharp ring from Oman – and a live feed from Pakistan , where the Antumbra has now arrived and interest is high – and in the next half hour it will be India’s turn, while in China first partial phases appear. [8:00 CEST]

The first ring phase! From a feed from Ethiopia , discovered while rewinding. And a Chinese live broadcast. [7:30 CEST]

Five live images from Oman in one feed on YouTube and Periscope in parallel, while a Slooh show has also started. [7:05 CET] Another Arabic feed – and a show in Portuguese. [7:25 CEST]

Partial phases of the Arabian eclipse can be seen in three webcasts, while a fourth is waiting for partiality to begin in India. [6:35 CEST] A common screenshot of the three. A further Webcast from the UAE shows four live images – and here runs an Indian Stream, with commentary, just before the first contact. [6:50 CEST]

Does the web save the narrow-ring SoFi of the pandemic year?

The ring-shaped solar eclipse would certainly have become an attractive travel destination today, since the moon is almost as big as the sun (magnitude 0.99401, covered sun area 98.8%), which makes for particularly interesting photos as last seen in 2017 . But trips to the countries along the annularity strip (middle; top and bottom the two regions preferred by the cloud statistics, the blue the clearer) are de facto impossible, and so today’s solar eclipse becomes an internet event for almost the whole world: after all announced a lot of webcasts and for example here , here , here , here , here ,Linked here and here – actually functioning webcasts from the annularity zone, not only from these lists, are explicitly embedded or linked again in this blog. The Antumbra touches the earth for the first time around 6:48 CEST in the DR Congo, Ethiopia is reached at 6:54, the Arabian Peninsula at 7:05 CEST and left again at 7:38 CEST: It could be around 7:30 CEST Giving live pictures from Oman (which, curiously, was also the site of the last Ring SoFi six months ago ). The Pakistani coast is reached at 7:49 CEST and India, another webcast stronghold, at 8:19 CEST, and left again at 8:41 CEST, after the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan is still hit at 10:13 CEST – and at 10:31 the Antumbra leaves Earth again after just missing Guam in the Pacific: There is a live Blog , press releases by AwB , NAOJ and MY-EAUNIVASE , further websites here , here , here , here and here , articles here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , herehere , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here and here – and an audio contribution from 4:03. [1:00 CEST]

General live blog from June 22nd to 24th, 2020

June 24th

Spectacular images and videos of the particularly narrow circular solar eclipse three days ago from India (still images by M. Sharma, some of which show the inner corona and the first video with Baily’s Beads) and China (the second video, which also shows the chromosphere) ) – also another proof of the corona , Baily’s Beads mounted here and here , more videos here , here , here and here , another live broadcast (from Ethiopia) and more photos here , here , here , here ,here , here , here and here .

The Antumbra on Earth, seen from the ISS: more pictures here , here and here [ADDITION: and here ] as well as animations from the satellites DSCOVR (USA), Elektron (Russia) and Himawari (Japan), as well as further articles here , here , here and here – and a last mosaic stone of the solar oven proved by a neutrino signal.

The Venus covered by the moon two days before the SoFi, taken at the Teide observatory in Tenerife – with the real relative contrast of the two celestial bodies, which makes the enormously different albedos stand out. The moon on the day before the eclipse , and again 31 hours old and in the twilight the day after the eclipse, Venus today , yesterday , Jupiter today , yesterday and the day before yesterday ( more ) and a drift chart of GRF & Co. , Saturn today and yesterday , the comet NEOWISE in LASCO C3today and yesterday , comet Lemmon today , yesterday ( more ) and the day before yesterday ( more ), PANSTARRS yesterday ( more ) and the day before yesterday ( more ) – and an anonymous donation for GMT , China’s large solar telescope finished , despite COVID crisis research by the NRAO , however SOFIA is not flying to New Zealand this year. [10:55 PM CEST – End]

23rd June

Start completes China’s constellation of Beidou-NavSats

With the launch of satellites No. 50 and 51 on a Long March 3C today, China’s own system of navigation satellites is complete : one live broadcast (start at 1:13), another one (start at 5:20), the suspension the satellite , more launch photos and articles here , here , here , here , here , here , here , here and here . Also a video about the SMOS satellite and its findings on soil moisture – and simulated sunsets on other worlds.

In addition to the German eROSITA telescope – later articles here , here , here and here – there is also the Russian ART-XC (“So the Russian saw it …”) on board the SatellRG satellite : its sky map with higher energy has now been made available interactively . Also a Phobos transit in front of the sun by Curiosity, a 3D simulation by Arrokoth , an early ocean on Pluto in a new model , a name for the moon by Didymos , the intercept target (also NASA and ESAReleases) – and a possible explanation for the different back of the moon , what Yutu 2 finds there and water ice in craters , but not the young ones.

An unusual panoramic picture of the ISS, stitched from three pictures taken during an EVA last November. Also home office in the GSOC during ISS experiments, Maurer talks about training in Houston, launches with used crew dragons , the possibilities of dragon tourism – and NASA planet’s suborbital astronaut flights on the upcoming tourist vehicles . [11:05 p.m. CEST]

June 22

The comet NEOWISE, accompanied by some hope, has appeared in the field of view of LASCO C3 on the SOHO solar satellite – and looks quite healthy … that could be something in July: Clicking on the middle picture provides the most up-to-date available, while the graphic below goes through the orbit Field of view of the coronographer shows. Also Lemmon today and the day before yesterday , PANSTARRS eliminated the day before yesterday , the 31-hour-old moon today at noon and later in the evening , Jupiter today , yesterday ( more ) and the day before yesterday ( more), Saturn the day before yesterday , nice NLC last night – and an obituary for the US science journalist David Perlman , who was still working at 97 and now died at 101 . [11:45 p.m. CEST. ADDITION: The brightness of NEOWISE in LASCO C3 is somewhere around 4.0 mag. ]
