Especially in these changing times, student\/faculty committees are the best way for student to get involved and institute lasting change. Committee work is an excellent way to influence the<br \/>\ncollege, get experience working on a wide range of campus issues, and work<br \/>\ndirectly with members of the faculty and administration.<\/p>\n<p>Students will be appointed by the College Council Appointments Committee and<br \/>\nnotified two weeks after the submissions deadline. Serving on a committee is<br \/>\none of the most effective way to get involved and improve the College with little<br \/>\ntime commitment. We hope you all will consider applying.<\/p>\n<p>See below for committee descriptions and more information about the self-<br \/>\nnomination application process. Only students<br \/>\nwho have served or are currently serving on FINCOM are eligible to run for<br \/>\nCollege Council treasurer.<br \/>\n**The funding structure has changed considerably for next year. The Office of<br \/>\nCampus Life and the Neighborhoods will no longer be co-sponsoring all<br \/>\ncampus events. This responsibility will fall exclusively on the hands of<br \/>\nFinCom.**<\/p>\n<p>**COMMUNITY DISCUSSION AND LIFE**<\/p>\n<p>COMMITTEE ON DIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY (CDC):<br \/>\nThe Committee on Diversity and Community (CDC) comprised of faculty, staff,<br \/>\nand students is charged with the responsibility to examine the health of our<br \/>\ndiverse Williams community, and to discuss problems and propose initiatives<br \/>\nwith regard to the College\u2019s commitment to educate students for engagement<br \/>\nwith our increasingly diverse world.<br \/>\nOver the years, the CDC has reviewed topics such as staff and faculty<br \/>\nrecruitment and retention, discrimination and harassment grievance<br \/>\nprocedures, admission and financial aid policies and practices, student<br \/>\norientation and advising training, and student retention and academic success.<br \/>\nMore recently the Committee sponsored the Williams Reads project during<br \/>\nWinter Study and distributed 800 copies of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar<br \/>\nWao and hosted numerous discussion group sessions. \u00a0The Committee will<br \/>\ncontinue to explore the intellectual, cultural, and social experiences of the many<br \/>\ndiverse communities within the wider College community of students, faculty,<br \/>\nand staff. \u00a0The Committee will meet on Mondays from 4:00-5:15 pm.<br \/>\nCommittee Members will serve two-year terms.<\/p>\n<p>WILLIAMS READS (CDC Subcommittee)<br \/>\nWilliams Reads aims to foster new connections among students, staff, faculty,<br \/>\nand community members by exploring diversity through a common reading<br \/>\nexperience. Developed by the Committee on Diversity and Community (CDC),<br \/>\nWilliams Reads is an initiative offered each January as an opportunity for us to<br \/>\nexplore a book together that will help us to celebrate and deepen our<br \/>\nappreciation of diversity. It is a goal of the CDC to select a book that will<br \/>\nstimulate community engagement and challenging conversation. In addition,<br \/>\nrelated discussions, movies, performances, and presentations will be offered.<br \/>\nFree copies of the chosen book are made available during the first week of<br \/>\nWinter Study, with the intent that these copies will recirculate throughout the<br \/>\ncommunity. \u00a0Students appointed to the committee will help with all aspects of<br \/>\nthe Williams Reads program.<\/p>\n<p>GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nThis committee hears and rules on grievances lodged regarding any form of<br \/>\ndiscrimination. \u00a0This committee does not meet on a regular basis, but the<br \/>\ncommittee members stand ready to serve as the need arises.<\/p>\n<p>CAMPUS ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CEAC):<br \/>\nCEAC currently has positions open for first year students (members of the class<br \/>\nof 2011). \u00a0Appointed members will serve until the end of their senior year. \u00a0CEAC<br \/>\ncompiles the Environmental State of the Campus report and members work with<br \/>\nthe college administration to improve the college&#8217;s environmental practices.<\/p>\n<p>THE COLLEGE AND COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nThis committee advises senior staff on issues that grow from the College and<br \/>\ncommunity&#8217;s interdependence with the primary goal of identifying and<br \/>\nencouraging efforts of mutual benefit. \u00a0The ex-officio members include the<br \/>\nDirector of Public Affairs, the Chaplain, the Coordinator of Community Service,<br \/>\nand the Coordinator of Experiential Education.<\/p>\n<p>COMMITTEE ON UNDERGRADUATE LIFE (CUL):<br \/>\nThe Committee on Undergraduate Life recommends policy on all non-academic<br \/>\naspects of student life. As a particular concern, the Committee maintains<br \/>\nCollege-wide oversight of the advising services offered to students. \u00a0The<br \/>\nDirector of Campus Life, who is a voting member, the Director of the<br \/>\nMulticultural Center or designee, who is a non-voting member, and a<br \/>\nrepresentative, also non-voting, appointed by the Dean of the College are all ex<br \/>\nofficio members of the committee. \u00a0The students on the committee are selected<br \/>\nto reflect the diversity of the student body, with respect to gender, ethnic and<br \/>\nsocioeconomic background, sexual orientation, class year, neighborhood, and<br \/>\nstudent activities and organizations.<\/p>\n<p>**ACADEMIC LIFE**<\/p>\n<p>COMMITTEE ON EDUCATIONAL POLICY (CEP):<br \/>\nThis committee is responsible for approving new courses, contract majors,<br \/>\nmajor requirements, and examining all possible changes in the curriculum,<br \/>\nlarger curricular changes, and recommending action to the faculty. \u00a0Please<br \/>\ninclude your current or intended major (and concentrations, certificates, etc.) on<br \/>\nyour self-nomination. \u00a0This committee meets at 4pm on Mondays.<\/p>\n<p>CALENDAR &amp; SCHEDULING COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nThis committee proposes the academic calendar to the faculty and works to<br \/>\nimprove class hour schedules submitted by departments.<\/p>\n<p>LECTURE COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nThis committee aids in funding lectures proposed by other organizations on<br \/>\ncampus and plans its own large lecture series to take place the following year.<br \/>\nSelf-nominations for this committee should include your (potential) major(s)<br \/>\nand which lectures at Williams you\u2019ve most enjoyed in your time at the college.<\/p>\n<p>WINTER STUDY COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nThis committee recommends and administers policy on the Winter Study<br \/>\nprogram, including reviews of all faculty and student projects for approval and<br \/>\nallocation of funding. \u00a0The committee also approves 99s and the travel course<br \/>\nproposals, and develops ways to streamline the 99 and travel course timetable.<\/p>\n<p>HONARARY DEGREES COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nThe Honorary Degrees Committee seeks the names of suitable candidates for<br \/>\nhonorary degrees and presents those nominations to the President and<br \/>\nCommittee on Degrees of the Board of Trustees. The Committee consists of<br \/>\nseveral trustees, one of whom chairs the Committee, one faculty member from<br \/>\neach division, and four students (two juniors and two seniors). The President is<br \/>\nan ex officio member; the College Marshall an ex officio, non-voting member.<\/p>\n<p>**CAMPUS SERVICES**<\/p>\n<p>DINING SERVICES COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nStudents on this committee advise the Director of Dining Services on all food<br \/>\nmatters, including the dining hall system, the quality and availability of food,<br \/>\nand offerings in Paresky. \u00a0The Student Dining Services committee is an essential<br \/>\npart of the success of campus dining. \u00a0Each month the committee meets with<br \/>\nthe managers and chefs from each dining area to discuss the menu, food quality<br \/>\nand service. The SDC plays an active role in future planning such as the recent<br \/>\ndesign\/concepts located in the Paresky Center. The Office of Dining Services<br \/>\nrelies on the SDC input for all food related decision making. Round table<br \/>\ndiscussions are held at dinner each month in various dining halls. Our goal is to<br \/>\nbe the best dining services in the nation &#8211; one that is recognized for<br \/>\nhealthy\/nutritious meals, sustainable practices and a professional team<br \/>\nproviding the best service.<\/p>\n<p>INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE (ITC):<br \/>\nThis committee\u2019s past activities have included investigating the possibility of<br \/>\nproviding computers for all students at Williams, ensuring that there is equal<br \/>\naccess to the network and all computer hardware, evaluating new purchases,<br \/>\nand examining the role of Jesup in campus life.<\/p>\n<p>FACILITIES DIRECTOR COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nThe purpose of this committee is to ensure that student opinion is taken into<br \/>\nconsideration when Facilities makes decisions regarding the policies for<br \/>\nresidential halls and campus work.<\/p>\n<p>LIBRARY COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nThis Committee advises on matters of general policy for the Williams College<br \/>\nLibrary system. \u00a0Past activities include advising on improved Science Library<br \/>\nfacilities. The committee usually meets once a month in the late afternoon, and<br \/>\nholds additional meetings when the Stetson\/Sawyer architects make public<br \/>\npresentations.<\/p>\n<p>CAMPUS SAFETY AND SECURITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nThis committee meets approximately once a month to discuss student and<br \/>\nsecurity relations, safety rules, party regulations, and other security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8217;62 CENTER CENTERSERIES PROGRAMMING COMMITTEE:<br \/>\nThe Programming Committee meets two to three times each fall to review and<br \/>\nselect the shows for the following year&#8217;s CenterSeries. These shows are some of<br \/>\nthe highest profile event on campus each year. It is important to the committee<br \/>\nthat student representatives have the ability to participate in this selection<br \/>\nprocess. In fact, the students are encouraged to talk directly to Rachel Chanoff,<br \/>\nthe Director of Programming for the CenterSeries, prior to the meetings to offer<br \/>\ninput on the shows offered for the selection process.<\/p>\n<p>**OTHER**<\/p>\n<p>THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON SHAREHOLDER RESPONSIBILITY (ACSR):<br \/>\nThis committee advises the Board of Trustees on how to invest the college\u2019s<br \/>\nendowment in a socially responsible manner. \u00a0In the late 1970s, the committee<br \/>\nconsidered whether the College should avoid investing in firms doing business<br \/>\nin South Africa during the apartheid period. \u00a0More recently, it studied<br \/>\ndivestment from tobacco companies.<\/p>\n<p>LYCEUM DINNER COORDINATORS:<br \/>\nThe Lyceum Dinner program allows students the opportunity to take a professor<br \/>\nor staff member to a free, three-course meal at the Faculty Club. \u00a0Managers<br \/>\nwould be responsible for working with Dining Services and the Dean&#8217;s Office to<br \/>\ncoordinate the events. \u00a0In addition, the managers are responsible for assembling<br \/>\nan end of year report on the program to be submitted to the program<br \/>\nbenefactor, the student body, and the Dean&#8217;s Office.<\/p>\n<p>COMMITTEE ON PRIORITIES AND RESOURCES:<br \/>\nThis extremely important committee advises the President on the allocation of<br \/>\nthe College\u2019s fiscal and tangible resources and on long-range financial planning<br \/>\nand also considers trends in the annual College budget and other matters<br \/>\nrelating to priorities in fund raising and resources for capital expenditures. Each<br \/>\ndivision is represented by at least one faculty member. Faculty members<br \/>\nappointed to the CPR serve staggered two-year terms. Students appointed to<br \/>\nthe Committee likewise serve staggered two-year terms beginning as juniors.<br \/>\nThe Provost, Associate Provost, Budget Director, Vice President for Operations,<br \/>\nthe Vice President for Alumni Relations and Development, Associate Vice<br \/>\nPresident for Facilities and Auxiliary Services, serve as ex officio, non-voting<br \/>\nmembers.
