Committees play an integral role in college governance. \u00a0College committees
\ndebate a wide range of campus issues and set many academic, social and
\nextracurricular policies. Committee work is an excellent way to influence the
\ncollege, get experience working on a wide range of campus issues, and work
\ndirectly with members of the faculty and administration.<\/p>\n

Students will be appointed by the College Council Appointments Committee and
\nnotified two weeks after the submissions deadline. Serving on a committee is
\none of the most effective way to get involved and improve the College with little
\ntime commitment. We hope you all will consider applying.<\/p>\n

See below for committee descriptions and more information about the self-
\nnomination application process. The deadline is Wednesday, May 5 at 11:59pm.

COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONS ARE LISTED BELOW:<\/p>\n

**COLLEGE COUNCIL COMMITTEES**<\/p>\n

FINANCE COMMITTEE (FINCOM):
\nChaired by the College Council treasurer, this committee aids CC in allocating
\nthe revenue generated from the Student Activities Tax fund and oversees the
\nallocations to all student organizations as well as cosponsoring all campus and
\nall class events. \u00a0Responsibilities include working closely with subgroup
\ntreasurers, attending all Finance Committee meetings, and attending Council
\nmeetings when your expertise is relevant to Council business. Only students
\nwho have served or are currently serving on FINCOM are eligible to run for
\nCollege Council treasurer.
\n**The funding structure has changed considerably for next year. The Office of
\nCampus Life and the Neighborhoods will no longer be co-sponsoring all
\ncampus events. This responsibility will fall exclusively on the hands of
\nFinCom.**<\/p>\n

**COMMUNITY DISCUSSION AND LIFE**<\/p>\n

COMMITTEE ON DIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY (CDC):
\nThe Committee on Diversity and Community (CDC) comprised of faculty, staff,
\nand students is charged with the responsibility to examine the health of our
\ndiverse Williams community, and to discuss problems and propose initiatives
\nwith regard to the College\u2019s commitment to educate students for engagement
\nwith our increasingly diverse world.
\nOver the years, the CDC has reviewed topics such as staff and faculty
\nrecruitment and retention, discrimination and harassment grievance
\nprocedures, admission and financial aid policies and practices, student
\norientation and advising training, and student retention and academic success.
\nMore recently the Committee sponsored the Williams Reads project during
\nWinter Study and distributed 800 copies of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar
\nWao and hosted numerous discussion group sessions. \u00a0The Committee will
\ncontinue to explore the intellectual, cultural, and social experiences of the many
\ndiverse communities within the wider College community of students, faculty,
\nand staff. \u00a0The Committee will meet on Mondays from 4:00-5:15 pm.
\nCommittee Members will serve two-year terms.<\/p>\n

WILLIAMS READS (CDC Subcommittee)
\nWilliams Reads aims to foster new connections among students, staff, faculty,
\nand community members by exploring diversity through a common reading
\nexperience. Developed by the Committee on Diversity and Community (CDC),
\nWilliams Reads is an initiative offered each January as an opportunity for us to
\nexplore a book together that will help us to celebrate and deepen our
\nappreciation of diversity. It is a goal of the CDC to select a book that will
\nstimulate community engagement and challenging conversation. In addition,
\nrelated discussions, movies, performances, and presentations will be offered.
\nFree copies of the chosen book are made available during the first week of
\nWinter Study, with the intent that these copies will recirculate throughout the
\ncommunity. \u00a0Students appointed to the committee will help with all aspects of
\nthe Williams Reads program.<\/p>\n

GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE:
\nThis committee hears and rules on grievances lodged regarding any form of
\ndiscrimination. \u00a0This committee does not meet on a regular basis, but the
\ncommittee members stand ready to serve as the need arises.<\/p>\n

CAMPUS ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CEAC):
\nCEAC currently has positions open for first year students (members of the class
\nof 2011). \u00a0Appointed members will serve until the end of their senior year. \u00a0CEAC
\ncompiles the Environmental State of the Campus report and members work with
\nthe college administration to improve the college’s environmental practices.<\/p>\n

THE COLLEGE AND COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE:
\nThis committee advises senior staff on issues that grow from the College and
\ncommunity’s interdependence with the primary goal of identifying and
\nencouraging efforts of mutual benefit. \u00a0The ex-officio members include the
\nDirector of Public Affairs, the Chaplain, the Coordinator of Community Service,
\nand the Coordinator of Experiential Education.<\/p>\n

COMMITTEE ON UNDERGRADUATE LIFE (CUL):
\nThe Committee on Undergraduate Life recommends policy on all non-academic
\naspects of student life. As a particular concern, the Committee maintains
\nCollege-wide oversight of the advising services offered to students. \u00a0The
\nDirector of Campus Life, who is a voting member, the Director of the
\nMulticultural Center or designee, who is a non-voting member, and a
\nrepresentative, also non-voting, appointed by the Dean of the College are all ex
\nofficio members of the committee. \u00a0The students on the committee are selected
\nto reflect the diversity of the student body, with respect to gender, ethnic and
\nsocioeconomic background, sexual orientation, class year, neighborhood, and
\nstudent activities and organizations.<\/p>\n

**ACADEMIC LIFE**<\/p>\n

COMMITTEE ON EDUCATIONAL POLICY (CEP):
\nThis committee is responsible for approving new courses, contract majors,
\nmajor requirements, and examining all possible changes in the curriculum,
\nlarger curricular changes, and recommending action to the faculty. \u00a0Please
\ninclude your current or intended major (and concentrations, certificates, etc.) on
\nyour self-nomination. \u00a0This committee meets at 4pm on Mondays.<\/p>\n

CALENDAR & SCHEDULING COMMITTEE:
\nThis committee proposes the academic calendar to the faculty and works to
\nimprove class hour schedules submitted by departments.<\/p>\n

LECTURE COMMITTEE:
\nThis committee aids in funding lectures proposed by other organizations on
\ncampus and plans its own large lecture series to take place the following year.
\nSelf-nominations for this committee should include your (potential) major(s)
\nand which lectures at Williams you\u2019ve most enjoyed in your time at the college.<\/p>\n

WINTER STUDY COMMITTEE:
\nThis committee recommends and administers policy on the Winter Study
\nprogram, including reviews of all faculty and student projects for approval and
\nallocation of funding. \u00a0The committee also approves 99s and the travel course
\nproposals, and develops ways to streamline the 99 and travel course timetable.<\/p>\n

HONARARY DEGREES COMMITTEE:
\nThe Honorary Degrees Committee seeks the names of suitable candidates for
\nhonorary degrees and presents those nominations to the President and
\nCommittee on Degrees of the Board of Trustees. The Committee consists of
\nseveral trustees, one of whom chairs the Committee, one faculty member from
\neach division, and four students (two juniors and two seniors). The President is
\nan ex officio member; the College Marshall an ex officio, non-voting member.<\/p>\n

**CAMPUS SERVICES**<\/p>\n

DINING SERVICES COMMITTEE:
\nStudents on this committee advise the Director of Dining Services on all food
\nmatters, including the dining hall system, the quality and availability of food,
\nand offerings in Paresky. \u00a0The Student Dining Services committee is an essential
\npart of the success of campus dining. \u00a0Each month the committee meets with
\nthe managers and chefs from each dining area to discuss the menu, food quality
\nand service. The SDC plays an active role in future planning such as the recent
\ndesign\/concepts located in the Paresky Center. The Office of Dining Services
\nrelies on the SDC input for all food related decision making. Round table
\ndiscussions are held at dinner each month in various dining halls. Our goal is to
\nbe the best dining services in the nation – one that is recognized for
\nhealthy\/nutritious meals, sustainable practices and a professional team
\nproviding the best service.<\/p>\n

INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE (ITC):
\nThis committee\u2019s past activities have included investigating the possibility of
\nproviding computers for all students at Williams, ensuring that there is equal
\naccess to the network and all computer hardware, evaluating new purchases,
\nand examining the role of Jesup in campus life.<\/p>\n

FACILITIES DIRECTOR COMMITTEE:
\nThe purpose of this committee is to ensure that student opinion is taken into
\nconsideration when Facilities makes decisions regarding the policies for
\nresidential halls and campus work.<\/p>\n

LIBRARY COMMITTEE:
\nThis Committee advises on matters of general policy for the Williams College
\nLibrary system. \u00a0Past activities include advising on improved Science Library
\nfacilities. The committee usually meets once a month in the late afternoon, and
\nholds additional meetings when the Stetson\/Sawyer architects make public
\npresentations.<\/p>\n

CAMPUS SAFETY AND SECURITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE:
\nThis committee meets approximately once a month to discuss student and
\nsecurity relations, safety rules, party regulations, and other security concerns.<\/p>\n

’62 CENTER CENTERSERIES PROGRAMMING COMMITTEE:
\nThe Programming Committee meets two to three times each fall to review and
\nselect the shows for the following year’s CenterSeries. These shows are some of
\nthe highest profile event on campus each year. It is important to the committee
\nthat student representatives have the ability to participate in this selection
\nprocess. In fact, the students are encouraged to talk directly to Rachel Chanoff,
\nthe Director of Programming for the CenterSeries, prior to the meetings to offer
\ninput on the shows offered for the selection process.<\/p>\n

**OTHER**<\/p>\n

THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON SHAREHOLDER RESPONSIBILITY (ACSR):
\nThis committee advises the Board of Trustees on how to invest the college\u2019s
\nendowment in a socially responsible manner. \u00a0In the late 1970s, the committee
\nconsidered whether the College should avoid investing in firms doing business
\nin South Africa during the apartheid period. \u00a0More recently, it studied
\ndivestment from tobacco companies.<\/p>\n

LYCEUM DINNER COORDINATORS:
\nThe Lyceum Dinner program allows students the opportunity to take a professor
\nor staff member to a free, three-course meal at the Faculty Club. \u00a0Managers
\nwould be responsible for working with Dining Services and the Dean’s Office to
\ncoordinate the events. \u00a0In addition, the managers are responsible for assembling
\nan end of year report on the program to be submitted to the program
\nbenefactor, the student body, and the Dean’s Office.<\/p>\n

COMMITTEE ON PRIORITIES AND RESOURCES:
\nThis extremely important committee advises the President on the allocation of
\nthe College\u2019s fiscal and tangible resources and on long-range financial planning
\nand also considers trends in the annual College budget and other matters
\nrelating to priorities in fund raising and resources for capital expenditures. Each
\ndivision is represented by at least one faculty member. Faculty members
\nappointed to the CPR serve staggered two-year terms. Students appointed to
\nthe Committee likewise serve staggered two-year terms beginning as juniors.
\nThe Provost, Associate Provost, Budget Director, Vice President for Operations,
\nthe Vice President for Alumni Relations and Development, Associate Vice
\nPresident for Facilities and Auxiliary Services, serve as ex officio, non-voting
\nmembers. The faculty chair of the CPR normally serves a two-year term.<\/p>\n
