{"id":2212,"date":"2013-11-02T09:44:44","date_gmt":"2013-11-02T13:44:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/collegecouncil.williams.edu\/?p=2212"},"modified":"2013-12-29T02:54:47","modified_gmt":"2013-12-29T07:54:47","slug":"a-timely-update-from-college-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/college-council\/?p=2212","title":{"rendered":"A Timely Update from College Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #351c75\"><b>Greetings<\/b>\u00a0<b>Williams<\/b><b>:<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">It&#8217;s\u00a0scary\u00a0how quickly this semester has flown by! \u00a0In these last three months, we have been working endlessly on all of the many items you have asked us to work on. \u00a0As promised in our email this past August, we want to continue with the legacy of updating the campus throughout the year. \u00a0Below is a summary of some of the items we&#8217;ve been working on this semester: \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #351c75\">Finances<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><i><b><span style=\"color: #000000\">Making the money work for you<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">College Council has been working diligently to ensure that it is spending the Student Activities Tax (SAT) in the most efficient and responsible way.\u00a0 This quarter, Council allocated approximately $210,000 to over 120 student organizations. \u00a0In addition, the All-Campus Entertainment (ACE) Concerts Committee received a budget to bring yet another amazing artist to campus for a spring show. Stay tuned for more information on that end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><b><span style=\"color: #000000\">Showing Council and the campus your full potential<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">College Council inherited a good amount of legacy debt-funds that student organizations owed to Council prior to fiscal year 2011-that was simply rolled over and not taken care of.\u00a0 In order to maintain a better sense of where the Council is allocating funding and how much of it student organizations are actually using today (instead of paying off debts), College Council cleared these debts; everyone is now on the same playing field. \u00a0Not only is this great news for all student organizations who owed money, but it also ensures that each penny we receive is used to pay for items students need\u00a0<i>now<\/i>, not five years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>Ensuring your experience at Williams is filled with lots and lots of entertainment<\/i><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">One of the most common concerns we heard from students was that there were too many\u00a0sources of funding to go to\u00a0when organizing an event.\u00a0 Consequently, this past spring, the Council voted to establish the Entertainment Co-Sponsorship Fund (ECom).\u00a0 ECom serves as a way of centralizing\u00a0several of these funding sources into\u00a0one fund that is overseen by ACE.\u00a0 In addition to providing funding, the Committee is also available to help plan the logistics for events on campus.\u00a0 Need co-sponsorship funding?\u00a0 Go to ECom and get help with all of your events!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #351c75\">Student Affairs<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i><b>Striving for more conversations\u00a0that are open and include your input<\/b><\/i><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">College Council has been working hard to ensure all student perspectives and opinions are represented in all conversations on campus.\u00a0 Recently, the Undergraduate Residential Life Ad-Hoc Advisory Committee (URLAAC) has been discussing the possibility of moving Quiet Housing to a different location on campus\u00a0and removing the neighborhood component of housing draw so students can have more rooms to choose from.\u00a0\u00a0Council has hosted several discussions regarding this issue and had the pleasure of meeting some of you as you represented your respective constituencies.\u00a0 The conversation isn&#8217;t over; please continue sending us your thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>Getting you prepared for Life After Williams<\/i><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Williams Career Center (WCC) is\u00a0restructuring some of their programs\u00a0to ensure they serve the plethora of different needs students have on campus.\u00a0 We are currently working on getting a better sense of what students need on campus to work with the Office and ensure that they are able to provide the best services and prepare all of us for life after the Purple Valley.\u00a0 Have ideas?\u00a0 Let us know!<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><i><b><span style=\"color: #000000\">We need your help: send us you great ideas<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Have a great idea for Williams, but don&#8217;t know how to go about implementing it?\u00a0 Want something done that would greatly benefit the campus, but need help starting?\u00a0 Let us know! The College Council Great Ideas Committee is\u00a0making a &#8220;Williams Wish List&#8221; and wants to know your great ideas for our school.\u00a0 Give us your ideas and we&#8217;ll try our best to make them a reality (the Bike Rental Program, SuperFan, and the nice plaques in each student dormitory were all ideas submitted to Council by the student body.)\u00a0 Keep these ideas coming!<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>Living and learning from one another<\/i><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Interested in sharing some of your skills with the student body?\u00a0 Want to showcase these talents in a more formal classroom setting? We&#8217;re got the best platform for you: Free University.\u00a0 Check out this link to learn more about it.\u00a0\u00a0<i>Coming soon&#8230;<\/i>\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/wso.williams.edu\/wiki\/index.php\/Free_University\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/wso.williams.edu\/wiki\/index.php\/Free_University<\/a>)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #351c75\">Student Organizations<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><b><span style=\"color: #000000\">Supporting your ideas<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">In the month that Council has been in session, roughly 15 new organizations have been approved.\u00a0 Have your own idea?\u00a0 Bring it forward and start your own club.\u00a0 Go to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/collegecouncil.williams.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">collegecouncil.williams.edu<\/a>\u00a0and click on the \u201cStudent Groups\u201d tab to find out more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Making your voice heard in every discussion on campus<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Williams is beginning to look at hazing more seriously.\u00a0 Consequently, College Council, the Office of Student Life, and the Dean\u2019s Office are communicating and collaborating to ensure that each and every decision includes the voices of your elected student representatives and\u00a0other students from the campus at-large.\u00a0 This way, each organization will have students representing their best interests when any sanctions are levied.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>Finding your space at Williams<\/i><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Vice President of Student Organizations has been working diligently to find space on campus for your organizational items.\u00a0 Council is continuing these conversations and is working to find more spots on campus so that you can safely store your items throughout the year and summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #351c75\">Community and Diversity<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><b><span style=\"color: #000000\">Cultivating a stronger community<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">College Council has continued to work closely with all groups on campus.\u00a0 This past quarter, Council has partnered up with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Minority Coalition (MinCo), and with the newly revitalized Lehman Community Engagement (LCE) to discuss some of the most challenging issues we are currently facing at Williams.\u00a0 In addition, Council is going to begin working with the Center for Learning in Action (CLiA) as they establish themselves more on campus and continue providing all of their amazing services, including but not limited to, amazing alternative spring break trips. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #000000\"><i>Continuing the tough conversations to make Williams a better place<\/i><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Council is continuing to have the tough conversations many of you have asked us to have. \u00a0In collaboration with MinCo, the Council will be hosting its monthly\u00a0<i>Community Matters<\/i>\u00a0discussions<i>!<\/i>\u00a0Last night, we held our first one (thank you to everyone to attended).\u00a0In addition, College Council will continue to collaborate with the Mental Health Committee, the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Group, the Health Center, and other such groups on campus to continue improving your stay in the Purple Valley. \u00a0Stay tuned for next month&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Community Matters.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #351c75\">Communications<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><b><i><span style=\"color: #000000\">Keeping YOU in the know<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">You asked for it, we brought it back! \u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #351c75\">You&#8217;re In<\/span><span style=\"color: #674ea7\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #f1c232\">The Know<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0is a College Council initiative that was started in 2012 to bring the latest news directly to you. \u00a0Find a copy of the latest issue\u00a0in a bathroom stall near you. \u00a0In addition, we&#8217;re continuing to update the Facebook page, providing you with the agenda on WSO, and sending you emails throughout the semester to keep you up to speed. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #351c75\">Academic Affairs<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><i><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><i><span style=\"color: #000000\">Living honorably at Williams<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">Council has been working with the Honor and Discipline Committee to discuss ways to better inform students about the Honor Code. \u00a0This month, CC and MinCo sponsored a\u00a0<i>Community Matters<\/i>\u00a0event that discussed this item specifically. \u00a0Have suggestions to help us meet this goal? \u00a0Send your thoughts our way!<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">We hope that this provides you with a quick snapshot of Council&#8217;s doings. \u00a0Stay tuned for more information in the coming months. \u00a0Please, as always, let us know if we ought to be doing something else!
