{"id":48,"date":"2020-06-15T11:12:52","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T15:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/climatez\/?page_id=48"},"modified":"2022-02-09T10:58:35","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T15:58:35","slug":"where","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/climatez\/where\/","title":{"rendered":"Where"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1>\n\t\tClimate Zangskar\n\t<\/h1>\n<h2>\n\t\tBy the People &amp; For the People\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<h1><strong>WHERE Do We Work?<\/strong><\/h1>\n\t<p>Climate Z is based in Zangskar, a subdistrict of <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/climatez\/files\/2020\/07\/Ladakh-UT-Gutschow.pdf\">Ladakh Union Territory (UT)<\/a>, that lies within the upper Indus Valley basin of the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grida.no\/resources\/6699\">Hindu Kush Himalaya (KHK) region<\/a>.\u00a0 Straddling the Indian Himalaya, Zangskar is a high-altitude desert region with year-round aridity and annual precipitation less than 110 mm&#8211;often as snowfall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/climatez\/files\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-19-at-6.12.26-PM.jpeg\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2020-07-19 at 6.12.26 PM\" height=\"1206\" width=\"1657\" title=\"Screen Shot 2020-07-19 at 6.12.26 PM\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/climatez\/files\/2020\/08\/Scree-Slopes.jpg\" alt=\"Scree Slopes\" height=\"990\" width=\"1500\" title=\"Scree Slopes\" \/>\n\t<p>With most of the landscape consisting of rock faces, scree slopes, snowfields, and glaciers, less than 1% of the region&#8217;s 7000 square kilometers are cultivated and inhabited. Most villages lie far up alluvial fans and are irrigated by small tributary streams.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\t<p>Zangskar comprises three valleys&#8211;<a href=\"static-maps\/\">Stod, Lungnag, and Sham that converge to form the central Gzhung Skor valley<\/a>.
