In particular, Dollar and Sobel discuss China’s exchange rate policy in depth.

Sobel has had a long and fruitful career working in questions of currency manipulation, and shares some of the insights gained from his experience, noting just how far that dialogue with China has come in recent decades.

One takeaway from the discussion: his defense of the People’s Bank of China (the Chinese central bank) as an institution that has long been supportive of an open and global role for China and its currency serves as a reminder that no government or group is a monolithic entity. Good-intentioned people will do the best they can with the resources they have and the space in which they have to operate.

In this episode of Dollar and Sense, Brookings fellow David Dollar interviews Mark Sobel about US-China trade and the practical issues with monitoring and punishing countries that unfairly manipulate their currencies.

[77,91,60,259,62,89,80,81,74
219,336,482,439,483,481
post-1890","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-10-30-minutes","category-business-and-trade-browse-by-research-topic","category-content-type","category-foreign-policy","category-podcast-episodes","category-browse-by-research-topic","category-research-by-region","category-east-asia-and-pacific","category-time-required","tag-brookings","tag-brookings-cafeteria-podcast","tag-currency-manipulation","tag-dollar-and-sense","tag-exchange-rate","tag-exchange-rate-policy
["GET
