{"id":597,"date":"2009-11-20T18:20:39","date_gmt":"2009-11-20T22:20:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.williams.edu\/biol225\/?p=597"},"modified":"2009-11-20T18:20:39","modified_gmt":"2009-11-20T22:20:39","slug":"field-journal-8-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/biol225\/?p=597","title":{"rendered":"Field Journal 8 History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eric Outterson<\/p>\n<p>November 20<sup>th<\/sup>, 2009<\/p>\n<p>Natural History of the Berkshires<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">History<\/p>\n<p>This week, I began an examination of the past which extended beyond the speculation of past visits to the Stetson parking lot woods.\u00a0 It began with a visit to the college archives to see if I could get a better look at my site through aerial photographs over time.\u00a0 Linda Hall greeted me at the elementary school and asked \u201cAre you Eric Outterson?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I responded affirmatively, she promptly handed me a large box with many folders.\u00a0 She told me, \u201cIn this box we have folders of most of the aerial photographs of the campus, and folders of photos of areas of the campus labeled by their location.\u201d\u00a0 I stared at the intimidating box, and decided that the only way to get through it was to start opening the folders.<\/p>\n<p>In the aerial photographs box I found a large collection of photographs extending from the 1930\u2019s onwards.\u00a0 Unfortunately for me, most of the aerial photography was of campus icons like Thompson Memorial Chapel, Griffin Hall or West College.\u00a0 The small patch of woods that now makes up my site is situated behind Thompson Memorial Chapel and Griffin Hall.\u00a0 As a result, many of the angles on my site were not great.\u00a0 Most were photographs which cropped out the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Though there was a slightly larger timeframe in which I could see my site, from the limited set of photographs that remains, aerial and otherwise, I have approximately 3 windows of time in which I could see my site well.<\/p>\n<p>These were around 1900, 1941 and 1962.\u00a0 There was also one illustration from 1889.\u00a0 In the illustration, there was a small stand of trees immediately behind griffin hall (labeled 16) and behind Goodrich (Old Goodrich).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-598\" src=\"https:\/\/people.williams.edu\/biol225\/files\/2009\/12\/superoldmap.jpg\" alt=\"superoldmap\" width=\"589\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/biol225\/files\/2009\/12\/superoldmap.jpg 589w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/biol225\/files\/2009\/12\/superoldmap-300x148.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Williamstown, Mass.
