They are currently teaching high school math through a teaching nonprofit called Blue Engine. The following year, they will be studying math at Cambridge on a Herchel Smith Fellowship. Feel free to <a href=\"mailto:megumi.asada7@gmail.com\">contact them<\/a> with questions!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve found that a lot of information about applying has been word-of-mouth and can often feel like privileged information among those already in math circles or those who have \u201can in\u201d at prestigious graduate departments. I thought that it might be helpful to share my experience of navigating the application process as a complete beginner.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Creating a list &amp; getting motivated<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/awm\/graduate-school\/a-guide-to-applying-to-math-graduate-school-megumi-asada-17\/\">Preparing for &amp; taking the exams<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Applying &amp; writing applications<\/li>\n<li>Costs &amp; financing<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/awm\/graduate-school\/visiting-grad-schools-megumi-asada-17\/\">Visiting grad schools<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>4. COSTS &amp; FINANCING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Funding Opportunities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Within Williams<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allison Davis\/Mellon Mays:\n<ul>\n<li>Can get various application fees waived (check individual school websites)<\/li>\n<li>Typically Williams funds a van for each cohort to take the GRE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dean.williams.edu\/support-services-and-resources\/graduate-school-grant\/\">The Career Center\u2019s Graduate School Grant<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Max $500 in funding; need to submit quick form with cost estimates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.btaa.org\/students\/freeapp\/introduction\">Big Academic Alliance<\/a>: <\/strong><u>very quick <\/u>application for fee waivers for U.S. citizens to a decent number of schools; may have priority application deadline:<\/p>\n<p><em>Participating Schools as of Spring 2017:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>University of Chicago<\/li>\n<li>University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign<\/li>\n<li>Indiana University<\/li>\n<li>University of Iowa<\/li>\n<li>University of Maryland<\/li>\n<li>University of Michigan<\/li>\n<li>Michigan State University<\/li>\n<li>University of Minnesota<\/li>\n<li>University of Nebraska-Lincoln<\/li>\n<li>Northwestern University<\/li>\n<li>Ohio State (otherwise $5 app fee)<\/li>\n<li>Pennsylvania State University<\/li>\n<li>Purdue University<\/li>\n<li>Rutgers University<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some of the schools above will ask you to individually apply to a fee waiver at their school.
