{"id":254,"date":"2017-10-09T09:34:18","date_gmt":"2017-10-09T13:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/awm\/?p=254"},"modified":"2017-10-09T09:40:39","modified_gmt":"2017-10-09T13:40:39","slug":"gender-representation-on-journal-editorial-boards-in-the-mathematical-sciences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/awm\/resources\/gender-representation-on-journal-editorial-boards-in-the-mathematical-sciences\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender Representation on Journal Editorial Boards in the Mathematical Sciences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our advisor, <a href=\"https:\/\/chadtopaz.com\">Chad Topaz<\/a>, recently gave a faculty seminar on his research on gender representation on the editorial boards of math journals. \u00a0Check out the study he and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/academics\/mscs\/facultystaff\/shiladsen\/\">Shilad Sen<\/a>\u00a0completed,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0161357\">Gender Representation on Journal Editorial Boards in the Mathematical Sciences<\/a>, and read the press coverage here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2016\/11\/math-women\/506417\/\">Why Are There So Few Women Mathematicians?<\/a>\u00a0(<em>The Atlantic)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sinews.siam.org\/Details-Page\/measuring-gender-representation-on-editorial-boards-in-the-mathematical-sciences-2\">Measuring Gender Representation on Editorial Boards in the Mathematical Sciences<\/a>\u00a0(<em>SIAM News<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some takeaways from his talk:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Equity, diversity, and inclusion are cornerstone issues in and outside of academia.<\/li>\n<li>Women mathematicians have been treated horribly for centuries.\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sophie_Germain#Introduction_to_mathematics\">Sophie Germain<\/a>&#8216;s parents did not think her passion for mathematics was appropriate for a woman, so they took away her warm clothes and fire at night so she couldn&#8217;t study math. \u00a0Eventually, when they kept finding her\u00a0&#8220;asleep at her desk in the morning, the ink frozen in the ink horn and her slate covered with calculations,&#8221; they relented and realized she would push through all odds to learn more math.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sofia_Kovalevskaya\">Sofia Kovalevskaya<\/a>\u00a0could not study in Russia because education was restricted to men. \u00a0In order to get permission to study abroad, she had to contract a &#8220;fictitious marriage&#8221; with Vladimir Kovalevskii. \u00a0She became the first woman in Europe to hold a doctorate in mathematics, but it took her many years to obtain a paid position at a university. \u00a0As a side note, she may have sustained a romantic relationship with\u00a0Anne-Charlotte Edgren-Leffler for much of her life.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emmy_Noether\">Emmy Noether<\/a>, namesake of Noetherian rings and pioneer in ring theory and theoretical physics, taught at the University of Erlangen&#8217;s Mathematical Institute for seven years without pay. \u00a0Initially, many faculty members resisted hiring her at all, saying, &#8220;What will our soldiers think when they return to the university and find that they are required to learn at the feet of a woman?&#8221; \u00a0To this, David Hilbert responded, &#8220;I do not see that the sex of the candidate is an argument against her admission as\u00a0<i>privatdozent<\/i>. After all, we are a university, not a bath house.&#8221; \u00a0She eventually began receiving a small salary.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alice_T._Schafer\">Alice Schafer<\/a>\u00a0was the only female math major at the University of Richmond when she attended in 1915, and she was denied access to the university library since women were not allowed. \u00a0Still, she graduated in high standing and went on the found the Association for Women in Mathematics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The percentage of women on journal editorial boards in the mathematical sciences is significantly lower than the percentages of women at lower levels in math.\n<ul>\n<li>51% of the US population are women.<\/li>\n<li>42% of US recipients of BAs in the mathematical sciences are women. \u00a0(Really, 42%. \u00a0At Williams, this percentage usually hovers in the 20s.
