{"id":170,"date":"2017-09-03T16:21:01","date_gmt":"2017-09-03T20:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/awm\/?p=170"},"modified":"2017-09-19T16:32:27","modified_gmt":"2017-09-19T20:32:27","slug":"getting-ready-for-the-semester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/awm\/resources\/getting-ready-for-the-semester\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Ready for the Semester!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the semester approaches, here are some things you can do to prepare!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>GLOW<\/strong><strong>:\u00a0<\/strong> Some professors use GLOW to learn students&#8217; names before classes begin or during the first couple weeks of classes. \u00a0You can make it easier for your professors to learn the name and pronouns you use by changing your GLOW settings.\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">You can add pronouns and name pronunciation.<\/span> \u00a0Click on &#8220;Account,&#8221; then go to &#8220;Profile.&#8221; \u00a0On the right side of the screen, you should see &#8220;Edit Profile.&#8221; \u00a0In the &#8220;Biography&#8221; box, you can add the pronouns you use or the correct pronunciation of your name so your professors will know ahead of time.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">You can change your photo.<\/span>\u00a0 If your picture does not represent your current gender identity\/expression (or even just aesthetic), you can change your picture by going to Account\u00a0\u2192 Profile \u2192 Edit Profile. \u00a0Click on the photo next to your name and replace it with one of your choice.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>WSO:\u00a0<\/strong>You can change your WSO settings as well! \u00a0Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/wso.williams.edu\">WSO<\/a>, then click Facebook\u00a0\u2192 Edit.\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Add pronouns.<\/span> \u00a0You can include your pronouns if you wish!<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Change your photo.<\/span> \u00a0As with GLOW, you can change your photo for any reason.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Indicate whether or not you are off cycle.<\/span> \u00a0If you check the off-cycle box, WSO will subtract .5 from your class year. \u00a0(If you are incorrectly listed, you can contact them.)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Choose whether your profile, dorm address, and hometown will be visible.<\/span> \u00a0Note that WSO Facebook is only accessible to people logged in to Williams accounts, so your profile will not be public no matter what. \u00a0Still, if you don&#8217;t want people to be able to find you on WSO, you can make yourself unsearchable. \u00a0Similarly, you can choose whether your dorm address and hometown are visible or not.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Name Change:<\/strong> \u00a0If you want to change your campus name, now might be a good time. \u00a0(You can also change your name legally, though the timing with this does not matter as much.)\n<ol>\n<li>If your campus name no longer matches up with the name you prefer, you can change it by going to PeopleSoft Self Service \u2192\u00a0Campus Personal Information \u2192\u00a0Campus Name Change Form. \u00a0To read more about the details of this process and where your name will be changed vs. where it will remain the same, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/registrar.williams.edu\/name-change\/\">this guide<\/a> from the Registrar.<\/li>\n<li>If you are looking to change your legal name, the Davis Center has <a href=\"https:\/\/lgbt.williams.edu\/resources\/trans-resources\/transitioning-at-williams\/legal-name-change\/?dts=1\">some resources<\/a>\u00a0but be warned that they were last updated in 2012. \u00a0All the relevant forms are available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/courts\/selfhelp\/name-changes\/\">mass.gov<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Accommodations<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> If you anticipate needing accommodations of any kind (or just want to see what is offered), email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:glw3@williams.edu\">G.L. Wallace<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"mailto:jmg4@wiliams.edu\">Jean Grant<\/a>. \u00a0You can also reach them by calling\u00a0(413) 597-4672 or going to the Office of Accessible Education in Paresky 203.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Counseling:<\/strong> Counseling spots can fill up quickly, so once you know your schedule, you might want to book a spot to avoid the waitlist! \u00a0Call the Health Center at (413) 597-2353.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resources<\/strong>: Now&#8217;s a good time to review the <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/awm\/resources-2\/resources-at-williams\/\">resources available to you at Williams<\/a> and think about which ones you might use this semester! \u00a0It can pay off to be proactive now and build a relationship with a counselor\/chaplain\/writing tutor\/etc. while you still have the time to do so.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the semester approaches, here are some things you can do to prepare!
