Events and Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some events and projects that we&#8217;ve organized in the past!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On Wednesday, May 2, AWM and RASAN cosponsored a <a href=\"http:\/\/williamsrecord.com\/2018\/05\/09\/student-groups-host-panel-on-gender-equality-in-stem\/\">panel<\/a> centered around the experiences of gender minorities in STEM.<\/li>\n<li>On Friday, November 10, 6-8:30pm in Wege Auditorium, AWM and FemCo cosponsored a screening of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/165535110708467\/\">Hidden Figures.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>On Thursday, November 9, 7-9pm in the &#8217;62 Center, AWM cosponsored the Fall 2017 Sperry Lecture,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/762483297283085\/?fref=ts\">Dr. Mae\u00a0Jemison: The First Woman of Color in Space<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On Tuesday, November 7, 7-9pm in Dodd Living Room, AWM and FemCo cosponsored an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/812818125546239\/\">I am Math\/Stat Discussion<\/a>\u00a0to brainstorm strategies for making academic environments on campus more inclusive.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christina_Hoff_Sommers\">Christina Hoff Sommers<\/a> came to campus on Wednesday, October 18, and we collaborated with FemCo and RASAN to create\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vQGnJTOnZNDbt8hqX1kOo6xYy-rHkXCIYy120wfZkibkqyt9cmxbm83pFaxw8TG8zIQgSHHhj_qQUbY\/pub\">this fact sheet<\/a>\u00a0with counterarguments to some of her most famous (and problematic) arguments.<\/li>\n<li>We were involved in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/events.williams.edu\/event\/davis_center_block_party#.WbG_0rGZOT8\">Davis Center Block Party<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday, September 19, an awesome event that provided students groups with a chance to table and get the word out about what they do.<\/li>\n<li>The Math Department\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/events.williams.edu\/event\/using_geometry_and_combinatorics_to_move_robots_quickly_by_prof_federico_ardila_san_francisco_state_university#.WbHAGrGZOT8\">kickoff colloquium<\/a>\u00a0took place Monday, September 11 from 1-1:45pm in Bronfman Auditorium. \u00a0Professor Federico Ardila of San Francisco State University gave a talk called \u201cUsing Geometry and Combinatorics to Move Robots Quickly\u201d that was accessible to a general audience. \u00a0He has written about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/publications\/journals\/notices\/201610\/rnoti-p1164.pdf\">diversity in combinatorics<\/a>, and we met with him after his talk to discuss his experience.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/220443478420927\/?ref=br_rs\">Underrepresented Identities in STEM+<\/a>\u00a0(cosponsored with BSTEM): Inspired by the success of our first panel, we organized a second student panel on Claiming Williams Day in February 2017 to raise awareness about the unique struggles of students of color, queer students, female or femme-identifying students, students with disabilities and other underrepresented voices in STEM+.<\/li>\n<li>Bronfman Period Jar: \u00a0Spring 2017, We placed jars filled with tampons and pads in the bathrooms of Bronfman as a substitute for the out-of-order tampon dispensers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1UpOzAtSLhMIi9WJ7nTcc5fBweZdoal-dtY8mgJT12mQ\/edit?usp=sharing\">Kickoff Colloquium with Courtney Gibbons<\/a>: Professor Courtney Gibbons of Hamilton College gave an AWM-sponsored kickoff colloquium on free resolutions in February 2016.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hidden_Figures\"><em>Hidden Figures<\/em><\/a>\u00a0trip (cosponsored with BSTEM and SIAM): In January 2017, We took vans of students to a free screening of\u00a0<em>Hidden Figures<\/em>, the inspirational film about black women working for NASA during the Cold War.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty Meal Series: In fall 2016, we hosted a series of dinners with new female faculty members to provide students with a chance to get to know them.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/events.williams.edu\/event\/awm_human_factrak#.WaSIEbGZOT8\">Human FacTrak<\/a>: We organized events in April and November 2016 and \u00a0where students could learn about courses for the next semester and ask people who had taken certain courses about their experiences.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/claiming.williams.edu\/2016-claiming-williams-schedule-2\/student-narratives-underrepresented-identities-in-stem\/\">Student Narratives: Underrepresented Identities in STEM+<\/a> (cosponsored with BSTEM): In February 2016, we held a Claiming Williams event to\u00a0discuss the experiences of underrepresented minorities in STEM+ and find ways to improve student experiences and increase participation in these fields.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/math.williams.edu\/i-am-mathstat\/\">I am Math\/Stat<\/a>:\u00a0In the spring of 2016, we started the \u201cI am Math\/Stat\u201d project to document and display the diversity of experiences of students in Math\/Stat at Williams. \u00a0We placed posters around Bronfman. \u00a0We are currently reviving and expanding this project, so if you&#8217;d like to contribute your own experience, see all the ones we have so far\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/UkV3VY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0and submit your own using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/XhCQn6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this form<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/218610305143080\/\">Math &amp; Art: The Good, the Bad and the Pretty:\u00a0<\/a>Annalisa Crannell of Franklin and Marshall College delivered a colloquium in January 2016 about math and perspective
