During my visit to the Hong Kong Museum of History today, I stumbled the various marital rites of Hoklo settlers in Hong Kong. During that auspicious day near the end of the year, a woman with a long and successful marriage would set the bed for the newlywed couple, as if her involvement would foreshadow another successful marriage. These superstitious rites remind me of what my parents used to tell me. If you speak of something bad happening to you or your family, you must pretend to spit your words out in order to ensure that the aforementioned event does not occur. It probably sounds silly to you, as it did to me when I was younger, but I relented nevertheless. Today, something attracted me to the blind hope and naivety that I had found so ludicrous only a few years ago. I probably won’t figure out what that something is, but if I ever do, you’ll be the first to know.
