This morning, we went over the curriculum and logistics for the course and met our language buddies. My buddy’s English name is Harry and he is from Hong Kong – his family lives about 30 minutes away from the Lingnan campus! After the orientation, we walked around with our language buddies getting to know them better and getting situated. We went to a shopping center near campus where we can buy food, toiletries, school supplies, etc. and to the school’s library. Next, the whole group met up and had lunch at a restaurant on the campus, where we were joined by the vice president of Lingnan University.
After lunch, we split up and the Williams students plus Harry took the subway to the center of Hong Kong. We got off at East Tsim Sha Tsui and walked along the promenade, passing the clock tower. We then took a ferry to Hong Kong Island and walked around for a bit, stopping in various stores. We went to this one restaurant where people ordered Turtle Shell Jelly and Turtle Soup – apparently it has a lot of health benefits! We also walked by the government buildings and Harry told us about the Umbrella Movement in 2014, which included a 3-month long protest that blocked a busy highway in the area.
We started to get a bit tired and it began to rain, so we hopped on a bus back to campus. We got dinner at the same restaurant we had lunch at and then head back to our dorms to crash.
