Fernandez, Yifei Li, Michael Mara, Frank Morgan, Isamar Rosa Plata, Niralee Shah, Luis Sordo Vieira, Elena Wikner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/notices\/201205\/\">Isoperimetric pentagonal tilings<\/a>, Notices AMS, 2012) has found least-area tilings by <em>convex pentagons<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/Morgan\/files\/2011\/11\/Screen-shot-2011-11-20-at-11.15.12-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-807\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/Morgan\/files\/2011\/11\/Screen-shot-2011-11-20-at-11.15.12-AM-300x164.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/Morgan\/files\/2011\/11\/Screen-shot-2011-11-20-at-11.15.12-AM-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.williams.edu\/Morgan\/files\/2011\/11\/Screen-shot-2011-11-20-at-11.15.12-AM.png 673w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cairo_pentagonal_tiling\">Cairo tiles<\/a> are popular in Cairo, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tess-elation.co.uk\/cairo-tiling\">documented by David Bailey and Helen Donnelly<\/a>, also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tess-elation.co.uk\/cairo-tiling\/pictures-of-sightings\">here<\/a>\u00a0and references <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tess-elation.co.uk\/cairo-tiling\/references\">here<\/a>. Three of the latter ones were discovered in the late 70s by amateur Marjorie Rice (homemaker, another noble profession), who had read about tilings in Martin Gardner\u2019s column in her son\u2019s issue of <em>Scientific American<\/em>. In 1985 Rolf Stein (U Dortmund) found the 14th. Bagina [B2, 2011] proves 8 edge-to-edge convex types (also Sugimoto 2012). Only in 1985 [HH] were the five types of tilings by a single equilateral convex pentagon proved complete (also [B1, 2004]); Hirschorn says they have unpublished classification for nonconvex equilateral.<\/p>\n<p>[B1] \u00a0 O. Theory 39 (1985), 1-18.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note added 30 October 2017.\u00a0<\/strong>New type of pentagonal tile <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/alexs-adventures-in-numberland\/2015\/aug\/10\/attack-on-the-pentagon-results-in-discovery-of-new-mathematical-tile\">discovered<\/a> July 2015 by <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1510.01186\">Casey Mann, Jennifer McLoud-Mann, and\u00a0David Von Derauc<\/a>.
