Welcome to Searchable Sea Literature, which is devoted to works by North American authors, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and plays. ‘Literature of the sea’ or ‘maritime literature’ is here loosely defined as works in which oceans, large rivers, or expansive lakes are critical to the story. This list of works was initially derived from  The Encyclopedia of American Literature of the Sea and the Great Lakes (Jill Gidmark, ed. Greenwood Press: 2000). Peer-reviewed biographies are provided courtesy of this encyclopedia and other scholars. To find an author, click on the first letter of his or her last name below or use the search engine in the top right hand corner.  A number of entries feature audio and video footage and are linked by their tag at the bottom of each post.  Click on either of these links to browse other entries with audio and video. or if you only want to search male or female authors.
